The link rod end is an essential part of a vehicle’s suspension and connects to each of the four link rods at either end via a ball joint. These link rods are in turn attached to either end of the anti-roll bar and together they protect the vehicle against rolling when hitting bumps or holes in the road.
The anti-roll bar raises on one side and twists when the vehicle hits a bump in the road. The force used in twisting the bar is transferred through the link rods and then finally dispersed through the link rod ends.
Because of the material that the link rod is made of (usually plastic or thinner metal), it’s more likely to fail than the link rod ends, which are made from a thicker material. Other vulnerable areas are the bushes and the gaiters that form part of the link rod system and deterioration of the ball joint. In any link rod or ball joint damage you will hear a rattling or knocking noise from your car. If the link rod breaks, the anti-roll bar will be ineffective. Damage to the link rod is an instant MOT failure.
