Renault Megane Common Problems and Solutions

High Oil Pressure

Problem:

The oil pressure is too high.

Models affected:

Solution:

The reason for most high oil pressure readouts is usually because the oil isn't being allowed to pass through the engine effectively. That leads to an increase in friction, which could lead to a fire. In Meganes, the problem will often be a defective oil-pressure solenoid valve. Buy a replacement valve and replace the faulty one. You can buy this from our range of parts today.

2

Power Steering Fault

Problem:

The power steering system fails to boot, making driving much more difficult.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is often a case of the battery not being in good enough condition. Your first job will be to replace the battery, which is a lot easier to do yourself than you think, and you can buy a replacement battery very quickly, easily, and at a low cost – get a quote from us today! You will also have to do a full system reboot, but this is a very simple process that you can do yourself.

2

Water in Passenger Door Pocket

Problem:

There is water buildup in the passenger door pocket, but there is no damp on the door panel itself or on the floor surrounding the door.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is a common fault, and a Renault dealer will usually make the repairs for free. The issue is the plastic sheet that has been fitted behind the door card, which has either become worn or come loose from its holding.

Poor performance

Problem:

On the diesel versions of the Megane you might notice that your car may have started to experience severely reduced performance with the DPF light becoming illuminated on your dashboard. The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is responsible for reducing emissions in the exhaust system, and if you do a lot of driving around towns or cities then it does not get hot enough to burn off the harmful particulates.

Models affected:

Solution:

Firstly, driving at a constant speed while keeping the car in third gear for around 10 minutes can help to heat up the DPF filter and burn off the particulates, which will make the warning light turn off on the dashboard. If this does not work you will need to replace the DPF filter, which means you will also need to replace the oil and oil filter at the same time.

Heating fan problems

Problem:

If you have noticed that some of the speed settings on your heating dial are not working then it is likely that you have a faulty heater resistor on your Megane.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to fit a new resistor to fix this problem. Search for your replacement Renault Megane heating parts through Breakeryard.com to find the right parts for the right price.

Electric windows problem

Problem:

It's quite common for the electric windows to fail on the Megane. You may have noticed a hesitancy or slowing down of the windows during opening and closing, in which case a faulty window regulator could be the cause of your problem.

Models affected:

Solution:

To resolve this issue you can try fixing the window regulator by watching the video below. If this does not work, you will need to replace the faulty regulator with a new one. Look for a replacement window regulator mechanism here.

Engine vibrating/whining

Problem:

You may have noticed that the engine is vibrating and/or making a whining noise, particularly when the engine is cold and you first start it. Two things can cause this: the inlet pipe vibrating or a broken clip on the fuel line that results in it rubbing against the air con hoses.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to identify which one is causing the noise and rattling and then take the appropriate action to resolve the issue, replacing any faulty parts.

Difficulty level

3

Poor engine idling and running

Problem:

If you have noticed that the engine on your Megane is experiencing some rough running, not idling very well or stuttering a bit then you most likely have a fault with your ignition coils.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to replace the ignition coils to solve this problem. It is recommended that you replace all four coils at the same time. Search for Renault Megane electrical parts on Breakeryard.com.

Shredded Cam Belt

Problem:

When the cambelt is being shredded, it will mean a loss of compression and potential for bent exhaust valves.

Models affected:

Solution:

Normally, this is only a problem that you'll find with the Megane Estate 1.5 diesel 08 plates. You'll need to buy a cambelt kit, as well as a water pump and new exhaust valves. In some cases, the problem will occur again, which is an indication that your tensioner is running out of line or there is belt over-tensioning. You should try adjusting the cambelt, and if this doesn't help, then you will need to replace the tensioner. Find your replacement tensioner here.

2

Airbag Light On

Problem:

The airbag light is on, indicating a malfunction.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is a common problem with later models, but it can be a very easy fix. If you've recently moved the seats, then you may have broken the connection to the seat belt pre-tensioners. If the connections look fine, though, then you will need to head to a Renault dealer for a full diagnostic check.

3

Fuel Leaking

Problem:

If your Megane is leaking fuel onto the road as you're driving, then you could be causing a major hazard for other drivers. This was a common issue with Meganes manufactured in 2018 and 2019 and caused a recall.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is very likely to be a problem with the fuel line. This can be resolved by using plastic glue if you can find the leak. You mustn't ignore the problem because if fuel leaks onto your exhaust system, then there is a danger that the car will catch fire. Even if you make the repair, it's worth taking to a Renault dealership because of that risk.

1

Catalytic Converter Malfunction

Problem:

The catalytic converter is not functioning properly, leading to increased nitrogen oxide emissions.

Models affected:

Solution:

This problem was the cause of a recall of all Megane IV models built in 2019. It most commonly affects XFB and XFE K9L generation 8 models. You can replace the catalytic convertor yourself, but you will need to have welding tools to remove the old one. Shop for your catalytic convertor on our website.
