First generation Audi A3 (1996 to 2003)

The first generation Audi A3 was introduced in the European market in 1996. This marked Audi''s return to the production of smaller cars. Initially the A3 was only available as a three door hatchback. This model was to present a more sporty image than VW''s Golf. Audi also emphasised the importance of safety with features like electronic stability control, traction control and brake force distribution included as standard in the Audi A3.

The range was later expanded in 1999 when more powerful versions were introduced. The A3 was also revised in late 2000, giving the model new headlights and rear lamps, an improved interior, a new six speed gearbox and other minor cosmetic changes.

Second generation Audi A3 (2003 to 2012)

Audi launched its second generation A3 in 2004, showcasing it first at the Geneva Motor Show. Designed by Gary Telaak in the year 2000, the new A3 launched as a three door hatchback, featuring a new automobile platform, a redesigned and more spacious interior and standard six speed manual gearboxes. Later on that year, the line was updated with two sport oriented models. In 2005, the S line trim level was released, offering new decorative elements.

Third generation Audi A3 (2012 - present)

Unveiled originally at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the third generation A3 was made available in the September of that year as a three door hatchback, five door "sportback", four door saloon and a two door cabriolet. Euro NCAP tested the third generation Audi A4, scoring it a strong five out of five stars in 2012.

Engines

The Audi A3 was originally launched with inline four-cylinder engines. After the A4, the Audi A3 was the second model by Audi to use five valves per cylinder. In 1999, Audi expanded its range, introducing an array of more powerful engines. This includes a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS TDI diesel engine and the 1.8T quattro.

The second generation Audi A3 was originally available with four-cylinder engines only. In mid 2003 the line was updated, giving the A3 a brand new powerful 3.2 litre VR6 engine. This engines offers 250 PS. Audi also started using a 2.0 Turbo-FSI engine, giving 200 PS.

The most recent Audi A3 is available with a variety of petrol and diesel engines, ranging from 1.2 litres to 2.5 litres. The 2.0 litre TFSI petrol engine is capable of delivering 380 Nm from 1,800 - 5,500 rpm, with 6,800 rpm its limit.
