What is a Body shell?
The Body Shell is the protective outer covering of a vehicle and is bolted on top of the chassis which holds engine, mechanics, electrical systems and seating area. The Shell includes the main frame, doors, front bonnet and boot. These will vary according to the make and model but are standard issue items. All the doors are bolted onto the frame with hinges that allow access to passengers. The doors shells would normally be fitted with movable glass, accessories and locking mechanisms. A frame holds sealed windows with shatterproof glass and windscreen wipers will be fitted to it for the front and back windows. The rear pane contains as standard; metallic filaments to heat the glass in colder weather and allow them to clear easily. The front window may contain filaments that do not obscure; the vision of the driver. The boot is also hinged to the frame and provides storage for tools, rear wheel and other items. The bonnet provides protection for the mechanics and electrical systems and easy access to the engine. Standard lighting is fitted onto the doors that will automatically switch on when these are open.
