What is a Bonnet?
Bonnets are a protective cover over the engine of the vehicle. Normally they are positioned at the front of the vehicle and fixed onto the frame by hinges that open outwardly. They allow access to the engine and are considered as a type of door. Consisting of two panels, an inner one that provides strength and protection and an outer panel that covers. The outer panel will be streamlined to fit with the outer body of the vehicle frame. The outer panel is directly exposed to the elements and scratches from stones and debris. The locking system is normally released from inside the vehicle on the driver's side, this helps protect the engine from theft, damage and keeps it in place while the car is in motion. There is usually a hidden mechanism under the rim at the front end to open the Bonnet.
A hinged strut is fixed to the inner panel roof, this can be pulled out and placed in a small hole to stabilise and hold the Bonnet up when checking or maintaining the engine.
