Scissor doors

Scissor doors are also known as beetle-wing doors, switchblade doors, jack-knife doors or Lambo door. Scissor car doors open vertically instead of outwardly as with conventional doors. The Alfa Romeo Carabo concept car in 1968 was the first car model that featured scissor doors. It was designed by Marcello Gandini in collaboration with an Italian car manufacturer.

The Gull-Wing Door

Gull-wing door hinged at the roof of the automotive instead of conventional door which hinged at the front-facing edge. Gull-wing door are named from the image of a seagull's wings.
These are one of several nicknames for doors that rotate vertically at a fixed hinge near the end of the windshield. Other nicknames are beetle-wing doors, jackknife doors, and Lamborghini doors. This form of door was first introduced in the Alfa Romeo Carabo concept car, designed by Marcello Gandini. Gandini used the design in the Lamborghini Countach. This type of door is synonymous with Lamborghini and usually used in high end super cars. The design was also used in the Countach's successor, the Lamborghini Diablo. The only current Lamborghini in production which uses this design is the Lamborghini Murciélago. Lamborghini Murciélago is a fairly wide car. The advantages of gull-wing door in Lamborghini Murciélago was that the doors open upward rather than outward.
Scissor door has gained popularity for less exotic cars. The doors of these automobiles were designed to initially open slightly outward before opening upward. Some of them were designed to open both vertically and horizontally.
The most well-known examples of automobiles with gull-wing doors are the Mercedes-Benz 300SL from the 1950s, the Bricklin SV-1 from the 1970s and the De Lorean DMC-12 from the 1980s.
