How do Wing / Fenders work?

The wing of a vehicle is usually referred to the panels which cover the wheel arches. In most modern cars it would only refer to the front wings, as the panels that cover the rear wheel arches are usually a part of the full body of the car. 'Wing' is the name used in British English with 'Fender' being the common term in the United States. The main purpose of the vehicle wing is to prevent debris such as: dirt, stones, spray from being thrown around by the rotating wheels, which also protects the people in the vehicle and people around the moving vehicle. The wings are normally made of either metal panels or a fibreglass type material, where mud and other debris can gather round the inner rim, which would be thrown up by the rotating wheels of the vehicle.
