The Citroen C2 was a popular model in the supermini class during its lifespan, although many feel that Citroen didn''t present the C2 well when it came to advertising. Thankfully the C2 was still appreciated, winning the Best European Hatchback award in 2003. It went on to become a firm favourite amongst young drivers due to its affordability to buy and run.
Citroen C2 (2003 - 2009)
After its launch in 2003 the Citroen C2 became a great success for French manufacturer Citroen, particularly among the young driver market - much like its predecessor the Saxo. For the UK market a number of trim levels were offered, from entry-level L to mid-range Design and limited edition Code. Many reviewers favoured the Design trim, which offered good value for money whilst still including a CD player, electric front windows and remote central locking.
There were some design changes between the different trim levels. For example, the L model which was produced between 2003 and 2005 came with a lower black bumper, door handles and no fog lamps. In 2004 Citroen launched their limited edition GT model which offered drivers a sporty bodykit with bright red, blue, silver and black paintwork and unique white alloy wheels. Only 2,250 C2 GTs were made in the United Kingdom, all of which had a numbered certificate to prove their authenticity.
A facelift to the C2 in 2006 saw a number of small changes, although the outside of the car looked fairly identical to the original - aside from minor changes to the alloy wheels on the VTR model. The update also saw half colour-coded door mirrors, clear side indicator lenses and white indicator rear lenses. Internally, the C2 received a new electrical system as well as a new stereo system with vehicle computer integration. There were also some visual changes to the driver displays and centre console, to create a cohesive look.
The entry level 1.1 litre engine was favoured for its affordability, although the 1.4 litre petrol was also popular due to its increased driving flexibility. The top of the range engine on the VTS was a 1.6 litre petrol, giving 123bhp. Unfortunately for owners Citroen don''t have the best track record when it comes to reliability, and this continued with the C2. According to What Car? mechanical reliability is one of the C2''s biggest problem areas.
