What is an Alternator?
An Alternator is an electromechanical device that converts mechanical energy using a rotating magnetic field into electrical currents. The term has been used for any AC generator but usually refers to small rotating machines driven by automotive and other internal combustion engines, although they can also be linear in design.
When was the Alternator Designed?
The early machines were developed during the industrial revolution in the 19th century by pioneers such as Michael Faraday and Hippolyte Pixii, who discovered that magnetic fields could produce electrical currents when a conductor was passed through them. In 1881 a high frequency Alternator was patented by Nikola Tesla and in 1882 a British electrician, J.E.H. Gordon produced two-phase generators. As technology improved Lord Kelvin and Sebastian Ferranti were able to produce frequencies between 100 - 300 Hz.
After 1891, a polyphase device was introduced which couldsupply varying currents of different phases. Later designs produced varying current frequencies between 16 -100 Hz which were used with arc lighting, incandescent lighting and electric motors.
Although engines are used to power the vehicle, Alternators are needed to convert it into electricity to charge the battery so the electrical systems can work.They do not need a commutator which makes them less costly and lighter than direct-current generators. There stronger construction allows the engine to turn twice as fast, improving output when the engine is idling. In the 1960's auto manufacturers substituted them to replace DC generators because of the cost.
Automotive Alternators use a set of rectifiers (a diode bridge) to convert AC to DC. They also have a three-phase winding, to provide a direct current with low ripple.
