What is an Ignition Coil?

The main purpose of an ignition coil is to convert the low voltages from a battery to the high voltages needed to provide a spark to the spark plugs. The spark needs to be of high voltage in order to jump the 'spark plug gap' and ignite the fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber. Ignition systems are only used in petrol vehicles, as diesel motors use a compression system to ignite the fuel. The coil is made up of a wired coil metal, wrapped around a soft iron core and is attached to the distributor which is then attached to the spark plugs.
