What are Crankshafts?

The crankshaft transforms linear piston motion into rotation. The crank has crank pins and crank throws with the big end connecting rods attached. The crankshaft is connected to a flywheel and sometimes to a vibrational or torsional damper at the opposite end. This reduces vibrations along the crankshaft.

Design

Multi-cylinder units are used in large engines to reduce pulsations and have many pistons attached to a complex crankshaft.

Bearings

Many large engines have several bearing journals riding on replaceable bearings held in the engine block. High performance engines tend to have more main bearings than lower performance cars.

Engine balance

Counterweights are used in engines other than those in flat configuration to balance reciprocating mass of each piston and connecting rod. These can be bolt on pieces or come as part of the crankshaft.

Construction

Most crankshafts are made in one single piece (monolithic but some come in several parts (assembled).
