The downpipe is situated just before the catalytic converter. As the hot exhaust gases are forcibly released down the exhaust pipe it goes through the header pipes and then through to the down pipe from there it is pushed into the catalytic converter if there is one fitted.
The largest diameter pipe is not always the best way to go. If the pipe is too big it will cause problems such as loss of torque and, as the pipe will lie lower to the ground, damage to the pipe if the vehicle goes over big bumps.
