An Exhaust Manifold is usually made of tubular steel or iron and is attached to the cylinder head on the exhaust side. Cars that have cylinders in a line normally only have one exhaust manifold whereas V type engines normally have two.
An Exhaust Manifold will take the hot exhaust gases from the cylinder head through the rest of the exhaust. The manifold will act as a connection point in the exhaust system and depending on the engine type have up to two connecting points.
Some manifolds will also have a heat riser valve which will divert hot gasses through to an intake manifold which will help the engine to warm up more quickly.
