The mechanical fuel pump is usually fitted to the engine block or head. Any fuel pump that is mechanical will have a diaphragm in it that causes the fuel to increase or decrease when it expands or returns back to normal. This type is called a positive displacement pump which is similar to a piston pump. To make sure that the fuel only flows in one direction there is a valve at each end that will force the fuel to flow in only one specific direction.
As manufacturers improved vehicle specifications the mechanical fuel pump was replaced with fuel injection units because these units work much more efficiently at higher fuel pressures and the old style mechanical pumps just could work at that high a level.
