The Fuel Sender Unit in a car is a very simple but ingenious device. There are two parts to the fuel sender unit - a sender that measures the levels of fuel and the gauge which shows the vehicle driver how much fuel is in the tank.
The sender is situated within the fuel tank itself. It has a float that is connected to a metal rod which is in itself connected to a variable resistor consisting of a strip of metal. A wiper is connected to the gauge and slides along the strip and conducts current from the gauge to the resistor. When the wiper is closer to the ground there is less resistance and at the top of the strip the resistance is high.
When the float is at the top of the fuel tank the wiper has a small resistance but when the fuel drops in the tank the float sinks, the wiper moves and this sends a signal to the fuel gauge in the car to let the driver know the car is running low on fuel.
