An Injector is specially made to work with the type of fuel it uses. This can be simple petrol or diesel or in more modern cars LPG and even natural gases. EFI or Electronic Fuel Injection has meant that both petrol and diesel use a similar unit. EFI uses a programmable device and can therefore be calibrated for the use of different fuels.

The injector is different from a carburettor system in that it atomizes the fuel and pumps it through a small nozzle under extreme pressure. A carburettor uses a vacuum to pull the air and fuel through to the engine.

An injector will open and close many times per second to let the fuel through. A plunger opens a valve and allows a small amount of fuel to be squirted through the nozzle in a fine mist. The ECU controls how long the valve stays open and thus how much fuel is sent through.
