What is a Bell Housing?
The Bell Housing is named after its Bell like shape and acts as a cover for the transmission systems in a combustion engine powered vehicle. It is used to cover the clutch and flywheel of a manual vehicle as well as the torque converter in an automatic. The Housing is usually bolted onto the engine block and the starter motor is located here to connect to the flywheel. Front wheel transmissions usually have non-removable Bells. These will be part of the transmission case. The conventional rear wheel transmissions are longer which allows for the Bell Housing to be separate removable part.
