The Honda Civic has been a steadfast sight on our roads for over 40 years. Nowadays, this popular family car accounts for approximately 30% of Honda''s global sales. The Civic has reigned at the top of the What Car? and Warranty Direct annual car reliability surveys for eight years in a row. It is also one of the safest cars in Europe, with the eighth-generation Honda Civic gaining the highest ever pedestrian safety rating by EuroNCAP.

The early Honda Civic (1972 to 1987)

Launched in 1972 the first generation Honda Civic was placed third in the European Car of the Year 1973. The first iteration of the Civic was available with a choice of two, three, four or five doors. More than 2.1 million were sold between 1972 and 1979. In 1980, the second generation was born with an engine that was known for its low emissions. Second generation Honda Civics were short lived; the third generation Civic was released just three years later with an increased wheelbase and innovative independent suspension.

Honda Civics in the late-1980s and 1990s

This Japanese manufacturer is known for its innovations in engineering, evident in the fourth generation Honda Civic which was first available in dealerships in 1987. These were the first cars with electronically controlled valve timing to maximise the efficiency of petrol engines. The Mk IV Civic was a different design to its predecessors with larger dimensions. The next Civic was launched in 1991 and was very popular, with 2.4 million fifth gen Honda Civics produced in the early 90s. They were available as a two-door coupe, a three-door hatchback or a four-door saloon. Under the bonnet of the fifth generation Civic you would find a range of engines from a 75 hp EX model to the nippy 160 hp VTi.

Sixth and seventh generation Honda Civic (1995 to 2000 and 2000 to 2005)

In 1995 Honda launched the sixth generation Civic. It was a popular model with 3.2 million sold. The Mk VI Honda Civic was available as a five-door hatch and an estate, dubbed Aerodeck, with various trim levels and engine sizes. The top of the range model was the 1.8 VTi that was decked out with more equipment as standard including sports styling inside and out. In the UK, there were some limited edition Honda Civics released, including the VTi-S and the Civic Jordan, the latter celebrated the Honda (Mugen) Jordan F1 team.

The dawn of the new millenium brought a new Honda Civic that ''pushed the boundaries'' of engine technology. Manufactured in Swindon, the seventh generation Civic was a similar size to the last version but was designed to vastly increase the interior space. The Mk VII also saw the front double wishbone suspension replaced with the MacPherson strut.

Eighth generation Honda Civic (2006 to 2011)

Designed by Toshiyuki Okumoto, the new Civic featured aggressive and futuristic styling. Instead of a front grille there''s an acrylic panel that looks like lights, the rear window is split into two divided by a spoiler and there''s a hint of spaceship to the whole thing. Despite the avant garde styling, the eighth gen Honda Civic is a practical family car with oodles of space and clever storage.

There was a facelift in 2009 which brought a redesigned front grille, with the 1.2 i-DSI engine replaced with the more powerful 100 PS 1.4 i-VTEC. For those looking for extra performance the Type-R''s 2l i-VTEC petrol engine delivers 198 hp and 142 lb ft of torque, and there''s plenty of sporty touches.

Ninth generation Honda Civic (2012 to present)

The latest Civic has been designed exclusively for the European market. Unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the ninth generation Honda Civic boasts improved aerodynamics, rear and side visibility and offers a quieter and more refined ride. This Civic has won a trophy cabinet full of awards since its launch including:

? Gold in the smaller family car section in the Green Apple Awards 2014, as well as overall Green Apple Champion runner up

? Parker''s New Car of the Year 2012 won by the Civic 1.4 i-VTEC SE
