What are Headlamp Switches?
The automatic headlamp switching system enables the driver to use an existing vehicle headlamp switch to operate a secondary light source which can be found either on the switch stalk or the dash of the vehicle. Once the parking/headlamp switch has been engaged, the primary circuit connects with a primary light source, then enables the energy source, resulting in the selected light being shed. A secondary circuit contains the secondary light source. A pair of relays connect  the primary and secondary light sourcesvia a circuit. When the accessory unit is connected to the vehicle, the relays are operative to interrupt the primary circuit from the energy source to the primary light source and simultaneously complete the secondary circuit from the energy source to the secondary light source.

Automatic headlamp dimmer

An automatic headlamp dimmer system switches a vehicle's headlamps from high beam to low beam when another vehicles lights are detected in front of the vehicle. The dimmer systems light detector only responds to infrared light to prevent spurious responses to reflected light from road signs and other sources. The system also detects the period of time the light is detected to distinguish unwanted responses to flashing lights by avoiding any periodically varying light signals. This inhibits switching between high and low beams in response. The system can also sense the activation of windshield wipers and preventing headlamp switching caused by interruption of light to the system's light sensor by action of the wiper blades.

Switches for controlling a vehicle headlamp

The present invention utilizes a dimmer switch for alternating the lighting direction of a vehicle headlamp, but does so utilizing control switches that ensures that only low beam-directed light is emitted by the headlamp when the headlamp is turned ON. This would minimise the risk of glare from oncoming traffic and so avert any danger of collision.

Headlamp Beam Switch Control
A control switch for a motor vehicle headlamp system includes a silicon photovoltaic diode in a short circuit connection across the inputs of an operational amplifier. The diode is tucked behind a lens and baffle and responds only to the light from oncoming vehicles and not to anything reflected from roadside objects. From the operational amplifier the output is applied either through an operator adjustable voltage divider or directly to one input of a comparator having a predetermined voltage at its other input. The comparators output controls the selection of upper or lower beam generators by means of a switch going in or out of the voltage divider so as to provide action relating to both a past and present environment. This forms into a loop in system operation with the lower-to-upper beam switching level independent of the operator controlled upper-to-lower beam switching level.
