About Ignition Barrel & Key

The Trafic Renault Ignition Barrel and Key is a unit consisting of a barrel keylock incorporating a four-way mechanical and electronic switch.

It is located in the steering column just beneath the steering wheel.

The purpose of the Trafic Renault Ignition Barrel and key is that when the key is inserted into the lock and the key turned, the first position releases the steering lock, the second turns on the electrical system and the third position engages the starter motor to run the engine. This third position is spring loaded to return to the second position and the engine, if started will run. Manual return to the first position will cut the electric power to the engine and it will stop. Turning the key to the off position will engage the steering lock and enable removal of the key.

Problems occurring with the Trafic Renault Ignition Barrel and key can include the key breaking in the lock, worn lock mechanism or damage by attempted theft of vehicle.

Renault Trafic trivia

  • One of the most popular reasons for buying a Renault Trafic at the moment is to convert it into a motorhome. That’s thanks to its flexibility and the massive amount of internal space.
  • If you want to see the Renault Trafic in action, the van features in the action film The Bourne Identity. Matt Damon collides into a Renault Trafic, but the van survives!
  • One of the main elements of driving a Renault Trafic that owners praise is the fact that it’s a lot of fun. That’s partly because of the manual override on the gear selector so that driving a Trafic feels like driving a race car.
  • It’s Renault themselves that describe the Trafic as ‘an office on wheels’. The fold-out desk inside the cab is great, but the van has become the butt of jokes because the size of the smartphone/tablet holder is ridiculously small.
  • The Renault Trafic has a lot of different names, depending on where you see one. It’s been marketed as the Fiat Talento, the Nissan NV300, and the Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro. It even had the standard name of Nissan Primastar until 2016.
