What is an Idle speed relay used for?
Idle speed relays monitor the engine revolution and transmits an analog signal and contact signal. Idle speed is the minimum operating speed (generally measured in revolutions per minute, or rpm, of the crankshaft) of a combustion engine. The engine generates enough power to run reasonably smoothly at idle speed, and to operate its ancillaries (alternator, water pump, and other accessories such as power steering). Most vehicle engines have an idle speed of between 600 rpm and 1,000 rpm.
An engine at idle may not create enough power to overcome the inertia of the drivetrain, therefore the engine must either be disconnected from the drivetrain by shifting to neutral. If the engine is operating a large number of accessories, such as air conditioning, the idle speed must be raised to ensure that enough power is generated by the engine to run smoothly and operate the accessories. Automatic adjustment features in the carburetor or fuel injection system raises the idle when the air conditioning (if provided) is running.
Vehicle engines that are enhanced to achieve higher engine speeds, such as racing car engines, frequently have poor low-speed power, and can be very rough at idle unless the idle speed is raised significantly.
