Once the engine is running an oil pressure device takes over the fuel pump and shuts the relay down. Within the oil pressure device there is a mechanism that sends information to the dashboard letting the driver know if the oil pressure is correct.
The relay makes a humming noise when it is functioning properly and if this noise is not heard there may be a problem with the relay. The car will not start without it working properly.
