What is Hydragas suspension pump?

Alex Moulton the famous British automotive engineer developed the system in 1973 for the Austin Allegro and since then more refined versions for the Rover Minis, 1100's 1800's, Metro's amongst others. Different varieties of the Hydragas suspension system have been fitted to 11 million vehicles.
Hydragas is a type of automotive suspension system replacing the previous Hydrolastic system, attempting to create a far less complex system than the famous hydro pneumatic system developed by Citroen.
Pressurised spheres containing nitrogen gas are integral to the system and act as displacer units. Until then only the conventional steel springs were the regular suspension design. By pre-pressurising a hydraulic oil the pressure in the gas displacers causes the vehicle to maintain a uniform height by connecting the displacer to its neighbour on the other axle.
