Renault Kangoo Common Problems and Solutions
Speedometer Dropping to Zero
Problem:
While driving, the speedometer drops to zero despite no actual drop in speed.
Solution:
Your speed sensor is faulty. You'll need to order your replacement from our parts list quickly because every time that you drive with a faulty speed sensor, you will be using up to twice the amount of fuel. It's an easy fix to do yourself, though.

The Key Isn't Working Correctly
Problem:
When you insert the key into the ignition, the key detection light switches off. When you turn the key, the engine will turn but not start.
Solution:
Try the spare key to start with. If it works fine, then the problem is with your main key, which you need to replace. If the spare key causes the same problem, then it's a sign that there is no fuel getting to your anti-theft system. You may be able to spot the exact leak point, but in most cases, you will need to order a replacement pipe system for the anti-theft unit.

The Car Isn't Starting
Problem:
The car won't start, and the preheating indicator light on the dashboard is blinking.
Solution:
There are a few possible causes for this issue. First, check your fuel pump as it may be faulty. If it's working fine, then look next at your fuel filter and order a replacement from us if it is blocked and damaged. Finally, have a look at your fuel hoses and check for airflow issues. If none of those resolves the problem, then your last option is to check the fuel pressure sensor and replace it if broken.

Misfiring Engine and Loss of Power
Problem:
The car occasionally misfires, is hard to start, and idles roughly. The Check Engine light may also be lit.
Solution:
The timing belt on the Kangoo is a notorious weak point, especially on the diesel models. You'll need to order a replacement timing belt from our parts list and replace the worn one.

Heating fan problems
Problem:
It is common on these vehicles for the resistor on the fan to break. This will result in the fan slowing down or speeding up unnecessarily.
Solution:
You will need to replace the resistor to solve the problem.

Power steering failure
Problem:
It is a known issue with the power steering on the Kangoo to have this problem. You will feel resistance from the steering at the beginning. It can also feel over assisted at high speed.
Solution:
As the power steering is fully electric, you will need to have the steering fully reset by a professional. If it is under warranty it will be free, otherwise it will cost. Replacement power steering can be costly, but you can save money by searching with us.

Vehicle surging
Problem:
If you have noticed a problem with the vehicle surging forward when just slightly touching the accelerator, there is a fault with the ECU (Engine Management Computer).
Solution:
To solve this problem you will need a software update on your ECU. If the vehicle is still under the manufacturer's warranty, it should be free to update the software.

Rear sliding door problem
Problem:
This can be a very expensive part to fix when you come across any problems. It is a well-known problem for a faulty locking mechanism on these vehicles.
Solution:

FAP warning light
Problem:
The FAP warning light is responsible for indicating to the driver that there is a problem with the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). This device helps keep the emissions low.
Solution:
You will need to fit a new DPF to the vehicle and also a new oil filter and oil at the same time. This will resolve the problem and improve the overall performance of the vehicle. The video below shows you how to change the oil:

Idling problem
Problem:
It is known for this vehicle to suffer with problems when idling in neutral. If it feels rough when idling, then you most likely have a problem with the ignition coils.
Solution:
You will have to replace the ignition coils to solve the problem. Remember that it is best to change all the coils at the same time.
Difficulty level
Using Too Much Fuel
Problem:
You are having to fill up with fuel more often and are going through it much more quickly.
Solution:
A faulty fuel pipe is the likely problem here and was the subject of a Renault recall of all Kangoos built between 2018 and 2019. You can repair the problem easily, though. Simply find and order a replacement fuel pipe from our store and have it delivered. Then, install the replacement. It's vital that you treat the issue, though, as the fuel will be leaking into the engine compartment, and that means there's a risk of fire.
