The Fiat Ducato is a reliable and well made van that is very popular for camper van conversions, traditional coachbuilt vehicles, and A-class motorhomes with integrated cabs. The Ducato was awarded Which Motorcaravan Magazine Base Vehicle Award in 2008, 2009 and 2010. It also won International Van of the Year 1994.
First generation Fiat Ducato motorhome (1981 - 1993)
The first Fiat Ducato was launched in 1981. It was much more angular in shape than the more recent models. This initial motorhome base was available with either a 2.0l 4-cylinder petrol or 1.9 diesel engine.
Second generation Fiat Ducato motorhome (1994 - 2006)
In 1994 Fiat revised its Ducato and the X230 model was released. It had lost the boxy styling and gained new engine options including 2.0l JTD, 2.3l JTD 16v and 2.5l JTD diesel engines. The second generation Ducato Motorhome was available with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. In 1998, the 2.5l diesel engine was replaced with a 2.8l Iveco engine.
Late 2002 saw the release of the facelift model, also known as the X244. This facelift brought about improvements in the cab and a modernised front end. The newer engines are known for being cleaner and more reliable yet they have more powerful common-rail engines. The X244 generally comes with a five-speed manual gearbox that is known to have some transmission issues with fifth gear not engaging properly.
Third generation Fiat Ducato motorhome (2006 - 2014)
The Mk3 Fiat Ducato was launched in 2006. Ducato motorhomes now had increased carrying capacity and Iveco Multijet diesel engines.
Fourth generation Fiat Ducato motorhome (2014 - present)
Announced in May 2014, the New Ducato is based on the third generation but has an almost completely different front end with headlights that would normally be associated with a car. The current range of Ducato motorhome bases is huge. There is a choice of five wheelbases, six different chassis lengths, various weights up to 4.4 tonne versions, and four engines.
Fiat continues to work closely with motorhome conversion companies and coachbuilders to ensure that its Ducato motorhome bases remain market leaders.
