Alfa Romeo 156 Common Problems and Solutions
Thermostat failure
Problem:
The thermostat is known for failing on the 156. If your engine is running cold, then this will be the most likely cause.
Solution:
The temperature gauge may be giving an inaccurate reading, so you may want to run a diagnostic check to ensure it is the thermostat which is causing the fault. If it is faulty, then you will need to fit a replacement one.

Airbag warning light
Problem:
Has the airbag warning light appeared on the dashboard? If so, this is usually caused by an airbag connector in the boot becoming loose. The video below shows the airbag warning light on the 156
Solution:
You will need to ensure that the airbag connector is tightly fitted in the boot. This should remove the airbag warning light from the dashboard.

Front suspension failure
Problem:
The engine is very heavy on this car and this results in the front wishbones becoming damaged. You will be able to hear a knocking noise coming from the front suspension, as you drive over speed bumps, or poorly surfaced roads.
Solution:
Fitting replacement front wishbones will sort the issue.

Engine overheating
Problem:
If you are having problems with the engine overheating, the radiator is known for failing. It is prone to corrosion and will need to be replaced.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement radiator, so as to resolve the issue. We can help you to find a replacement radiator, at a very low price.

Turbo problems
Problem:
One of the turbo hoses is especially prone to cracking on the 156. The bottom of the two hoses is the most prone to cracking, as it rubs against a screw. Some common symptoms of this failure are excessive whistling noises coming from the turbo (on top of the engine), black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating, or the possibility of increased fuel consumption.
Solution:
You will need to replace the turbo hose, in order to fix the problem.
