Alfa Romeo Giulietta Common Problems and Solutions
Engine Turns Itself Off
Problem:
The engine is shutting down unexpectedly, especially when stopped at traffic lights or junctions.
Solution:
You might think this will be a very large and costly problem, but it is probably just a simple engine valve fault. These do wear out, but it's very easy to order a new one from our parts page and fit it.

Knocking Noise
Problem:
You can hear a knocking noise while driving, and the road feels bumpier.
Solution:
The front suspension on the Giulietta is a well-known weak point, and that knocking sound indicates yours has become too worn. You will need to order a replacement front suspension system from BreakerYard and install the damaged one.

Ticking Noise From Engine
Problem:
You can hear a ticking noise from the engine, and it sometimes misfires. The check engine light might also be illuminated.
Solution:
You have a timing belt failure that needs replacing. We always stock timing belts for the Giulietta and can arrange for your replacement to be delivered. Fit the new timing belt, and that telltale ticking will disappear.

Loss of Drive Power
Problem:
The car loses power while driving, and you might notice jerky gear shifts.
Solution:
This issue is caused by the wiring loom connected to the transmission oil pump, which is chafing against one of the support brackets. The wiring will usually be damaged, so you'll need to order some replacement wiring from our store and replace any damaged sections. If the wires aren't damaged, then reposition them so they are away from the support bracket.

Worn gear knob
Problem:
The gear knob on the Giulietta is known for wearing or breaking. It’s made from plastic as standard, and the clips inside are prone to shearing off, causing the top of the gear knob to come off in your hand while changing gear.
Solution:
You will need to replace the gear knob to resolve the issue.

Water leaks into boot
Problem:
If you are experiencing water leaking into the boot, it is usually caused by a faulty rear wiper seal. This can lead to water accumulating inside the rear hatch, wet carpets in the boot, and a build-up of water in the spare wheel well.
Solution:
You will need to replace the rear wiper seal to stop the leak. You might also need to drain any water from the spare wheel well to prevent corrosion, and dry the carpets to avoid dampness developing.

DNA system failing
Problem:
Has the DNA (Dynamic, Normal, and All-weather) system failed on your Giulietta? This system is prone to failure, especially on models built before 2011, and the component responsible for the issue is the MultiAir actuator. If this part fails, you may see an error message on the display, such as 'Dynamic mode unavailable'. You might also notice a lack of power or hesitancy.
Solution:
You will need to install a replacement MultiAir actuator to resolve the issue.

3rd brake light failure
Problem:
There is a known issue with the wiring of the third brake light on this vehicle. If the third brake light is not functioning, faulty wiring is the most probable cause. The most frequent reason for this failure is water leaking in through the wiper seal.
Solution:
In most cases, you will need to replace the entire third brake light unit, but it's worth checking whether you can fix the wiring to resolve the issue. If you require a replacement unit, we can assist you in finding one at a very low price.
Difficulty level
Low Horsepower
Problem:
The car has limited horsepower and consumes more fuel than typical.
Solution:
It's quite likely that your intercooler sleeve has come loose due to a faulty retaining band. Order a replacement from our parts list, reattach the intercooler sleeve, and secure it with the new metal band.
