Alfa Romeo Spider Common Problems and Solutions
AC Failure
Problem:
The AC is now inactive.
Solution:
Unfortunately, a faulty AC in the Spider will almost always be due to a broken radiator. The only solution will be to have a new radiator delivered by BreakerYard and install the replacement.
Difficulty level
High Clutch Biting Point
Problem:
The clutch has a much higher biting point than it used to.
Solution:
Although the clutch and the gearbox on the Spider are very long-lasting, if your bite is getting higher, then that's a sign that your clutch is on the way out. Find a new clutch on our parts list and check out some online tutorials that will take you through the replacement process step by step.
Difficulty level
Steering Vibration (3.0-Ltr Models)
Problem:
When you apply the brakes while driving at high speed, you can feel excessive vibration throughout the car.
Solution:
The front brake discs on larger versions of the Spider are very durable, but they can be prone to occasional warping. Check your discs, and if they are warped, then you can pay to have them remachined, although this does affect braking performance over time. It's best to simply order new brake discs that will be much more durable and which you can have delivered when you order through us.
Difficulty level
Gradual Loss Of Power
Problem:
You are noticing that your engine is slowly reducing in power, gradually dropping in performance levels.
Solution:
You likely have an airflow meter that's worn out. The good news is that you can find replacements at a very low cost in our online store, and this is an easy job to do yourself.
Difficulty level
Engine Rattle (All 2.0-Ltr Models)
Problem:
The engine is making a rattling sound and may even sound a lot more like a diesel engine.
Solution:
Your cam variator has likely reached its end of life. Most experts recommend replacing the cam variator whenever you fit a new cam belt. Cam variators for the Spider are easy to find on our parts page, and installation is relatively straightforward.

Roof Won't Go Down
Problem:
Your roof won't go down, or may be stuck in the down position.
Solution:
One of the most commonly reported faults of the Spider, this will usually be caused by the flap motors. The problem is that this can often be a difficult replacement part to source by a garage. We have flap motors in stock at all times and can deliver your replacements quickly.
Difficulty level
Clunking Suspension
Problem:
You can hear a clunking sound coming from your rear suspension.
Solution:
If you catch this problem quickly enough, then the only part you'll need to order from our parts list is rear suspension bushes. If you've ignored the problem for too long, though, then your suspension linkage and arms are going to need to be replaced as well.
Difficulty level
Engine Misfire
Problem:
The engine has started to misfire and may not start at all. If it does start, then you can hear a squealing sound.
Solution:
Alfa Romeo has said that the cambelt on the Spider needs to be replaced every 72,000 miles (or every six years), but most owners say that theirs needs to be replaced every 36,000 miles (or three years). You're going to need to order a new cambelt and install it. This is quite a big job, but there are plenty of online guides available, and we have cambelts for the Spider in stock at all times for quick ordering and delivery.
Difficulty level
Engine Sputter
Problem:
The engine has started to sputter, and there is an overall drop in engine performance. You may also notice an audible metallic sound and dirty exhaust smoke.
Solution:
These are all signs that you haven't been doing regular servicing and that oil is clogging your engine. If you don't flush the system, then you're going to end up damaging your engine to the point where it will seize up and need to be replaced.
Difficulty level
Cracked brake pipes
Problem:
If you have noticed that the brake pipes are cracked/split, then this is fairly common on this car. If they are cracked/split, then the brake fluid will most likely be leaking onto the ground.
Solution:
You will need to replace the brake pipes to rectify the issue. You will also need to top up the brake fluid.
Difficulty level
High oil consumption
Problem:
The Spider is known for having a very high oil consumption. You should keep a regular check on the oil levels, by ensuring that the levels are between the MIN and MAX lines on the oil dipstick. If the oil levels get to low, it can damage the crankshaft, as well as other engine parts.
Solution:
As mentioned above, you will need to keep a regular check up on the oil levels and you will need to top up the oil when necessary, so as to avoid damaging any engine parts.
Difficulty level
Cold start engine noise
Problem:
Can you hear a loud clattering noise coming from the engine, when starting the car from cold? This is a problem in cars with a petrol engine, making it sound more like a diesel on start-up. This issue is caused by a failure of the timing variator. Is the video below anything like your problem?
Solution:
Fitting a replacement timing variator will fix the problem. However, we know that this can be an expensive part to replace, but we can help you to find a replacement timing variator, at a very low price.
Difficulty level
Radiator rust problems
Problem:
The radiator on the Spider is prone to rusting, particularly the protective plate at the bottom of the radiator. If this plate is really rusty, then you will need to replace it to sort the problem.
Solution:
As mentioned above, you will need to replace the radiator protector plate, in order to protect the radiator and stop the rust from spreading.
