Bentley Turbo R Common Problems and Solutions

Slow Starting Engine

Problem:

The engine is taking a long time to start. Your headlights and dashboard lights may be dim, and the check engine light will usually be permanently on.

Models affected:

Solution:

The Turbo R burns through batteries, and they need to be replaced a lot more often than with other cars. Replacing the battery is a heavy job, but it’s a lot easier than you might think, and we always have them available for quick delivery.

Knocking From Front

Problem:

There is a knocking sound coming from the front of the car when driving over uneven surfaces.

Models affected:

Solution:

Turbo Rs have a well-known issue with the front ball joints on the suspension, and you're going to have to replace them. This can be a fiddly and quite exhausting job, but it’s very doable. Have a look through our parts page for the Turbo R and order new front ball joints before they start to cause additional issues.

Tapping Sound From Engine

Problem:

You can hear a tapping sound coming from the engine while it’s running.

Models affected:

Solution:

The hydraulic tappets in the Bentley Turbo R are prone to premature wear, and this can be an expensive replacement job if you send it to a garage. If you want to save yourself some cash and do the job yourself, make sure that you don’t order the GM tappets as these have proven to be unfit for purpose. Instead, find some original Rolls-Royce tappets on our parts list as these are much more durable.

Loss of Hydraulic Brake Power

Problem:

The car is taking longer to come to a stop, and you can feel a dramatic loss of brake power.

Models affected:

Solution:

The hydraulic brake system on the Bentley gets put through its paces, and replacing the LHM system is a challenging job. If you're an experienced DIYer, then this is a doable job, but it can take a few days to do all of the work. As well as the LHM system, you’ll usually have to order new brake pads and discs from our parts list. Check the leading and trailing callipers, too, as these can wear out quickly.

Bumpy Driving

Problem:

The usually smooth driving that you get with a Bentley has suddenly become much rougher, and you can feel every bump in the road.

Models affected:

Solution:

The Bentley Turbo R is an extremely heavy car, and that means a lot of wear on the suspension system. You need to check for wear on your suspension system quite often, and any loss of smoothness will mean worn front shock bushings, compliance mounts, or triangle lever bushings. We have all of the suspension parts of the Bentley Turbo R in stock at all times, and ordering direct from BreakerYard means quick delivery.

Wet front carpets

Problem:

There could be two causes of wet front carpets on the Turbo R. If you can smell a sweet smell, then this is most likely caused by a faulty heater matrix. If it is not a sweet smell, then it could be caused by a faulty windscreen seal.

Models affected:

Solution:

Once you have identified if it is the heater matrix or the windscreen seal causing the fault, you will need to replace the faulty part to rectify the issue.

Oil leaks

Problem:

If you have begun to notice that there is oil leaking onto the ground underneath the car, it will most likely be caused by one of the following problems; Either the rocker cover gasket, or the rear main oil seal are faulty. If the oil is coming from the back of the engine, it will be the rear oil seal and if it is coming from the front of the engine, it will be the rocker cover gasket causing the leak.

Models affected:

Solution:

Depending on where the oil leak is coming from, you will either need to replace the rear main oil seal, or the rocker cover gasket to stop the leak.

Burning Oil Smell

Problem:

There is a smell of burning oil inside the car, and there may be oil spots on the road where you've parked.

Models affected:

Solution:

Steering rack leaks are not that common on the Turbo R, but they do happen. The leak is usually at the end of the steering rack, where it connects to the tie rods. Annoyingly, due to the design of the Bentley, you won’t be able to get away with ordering new seals. Instead, you will need to find a new power steering rack on our parts list and replace the entire thing.
