BMW 1 Series Hatchback Common Problems and Solutions
Coil pack failure
Problem:
Coil pack failure is pretty common on the petrol engined versions of the 1-Series. If you are having problems with rough running of the engine and/or sudden rises and falls of the engine temperature, this will be the cause. You may also smell petrol in the cabin with this fault.
Solution:
Replacing the coil pack will sort the problem.

DTC warning light
Problem:
If the DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) warning light has appeared on your dashboard, it is usually caused by a faulty traction control unit.
Solution:
You will most likely need to replace the traction control unit to resolve the issue. If your car is still under warranty, this will be fixed for free.

Cold start idling problem
Problem:
Are you having issues with the idling, when you start the vehicle from cold? If so, this is caused by an issue with the ECU and seems to be a paticular problem in cold weather. The car is known to have erratic idling, where the needle jumps up and down instead of remaining at a constant speed. Is the problem in the video below anything like yours?
Solution:
Having the ECU re-programmed should sort the issue.

Door handle problems
Problem:
Are you having problems with one of your door handles not returning to its proper position after use? If so, this is a known issue on the 1-Series, as the handle sticks out of its mounting after use. This is caused by a failure of both the handle and the catch.
Solution:
You will need to replace both the handle and the catch to fix this problem. You will also need to try and get the same colour handle, or if not, you will need to have it painted the same colour as the body on your car. This can be an expensive replacement, but we can help you to find your replacement door handle parts at very low prices.
