BMW 5 Series Common Problems and Solutions
Water leaks
Problem:
Have you noticed water leaking into the boot area? You should pay particular attention to the spare wheel well, so as to make sure that the electronic control module does not have water damage. If this becomes damaged it can be very expensive to replace/repair. The leak can either be caused by blocked sunroof drains, or the boot seals.
Solution:
Once you have identified what is causing the leak, you will either need to unblock the sunroof drains, or replace the boot seals to stop the leak.

Rear window wiper failure
Problem:
On the touring version of the 5-Series there are known issues with the rear wiper spindle failing. If you have noticed that the rear wipers are not working properly, then you will need to check the spindle as quickly as possible, before the wiper mechanism becomes damaged.
Solution:
Fitting a replacement spindle will rectify the issue.

Engine overheating
Problem:
The thermostat is known for failing, causing the engine to overheat. If not dealt with quickly, it can cause damage to other engine parts and become a very expensive repair.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement thermostat to resolve the issue. Watch this video below for more information:

Air conditioning problems
Problem:
Is the fan speed changing suddenly on your air conditioning? Is it only blowing out cold air on the lower settings? If yes to one, or both of these questions, then you most likely have a problem with the blower motor resistor.
Solution:
Replacing the blower motor resistor, should sort the problem. We can help you to find a replacement blower motor resistor, at a very low price.

Steering wheel noises
Problem:
Can you hear squeaking noises coming from the steering wheel, particularly when driving at low speeds? Can you hear a knocking noise, when you turn the steering wheel from full lock one side to the other? If yes to one, or both of these questions, it is caused by an issue with a lack of lubrication on the steering rack.
Solution:
You will need to lubricate the steering rack, in order to fix these issues.
