BMW X6 Common Problems and Solutions
Tailgate Spoiler is Loose
Problem:
The tailgate spoiler wobbles or vibrates excessively when driving. In severe cases, it could detach completely.
Solution:
The issue stems from an improperly bonded rear spoiler. It tends to become loose at the top edge of the tailgate on the right-hand side, where it meets the rear of the roof. You will need to check our parts list for a new bumper, which we can deliver directly to you.

Diesel engine problems
Problem:
On the diesel engine BMW X6, there is a component called the swirl flap, which is prone to breaking. If this part breaks, it can allow metal debris into the engine, which can have serious consequences, even leading to the need for a new engine. The best way to check for this problem is by inspecting around the intake manifold for signs of oil leaks.
Solution:
At the very least, you will need to replace the swirl flap, but have the engine checked by a specialist to look for any damage. If you need a new engine, we can assist you in finding a replacement at a very low price.

Electric handbrake problems
Problem:
Are you experiencing difficulty releasing the handbrake on your X6? If so, this is caused by a failing handbrake actuator, which results from a software malfunction.
Solution:
You will need a software update to fix the problem.

Rattling from doors
Problem:
Can you hear a rattling noise coming from the doors while driving? If so, this is caused by poor fitment of the door cards (the trim that fills the inside of the door panel). It sounds like a buzzing noise, which will be most noticeable when driving over speed bumps or poorly surfaced roads.
Solution:
The door cards need slight adjustment to ensure they fit correctly. This should eliminate the rattling noise.

Electric seats/steering column problems
Problem:
Are you experiencing any issues with adjusting the electric front seats or the steering column? Both systems are operated by the same switch assembly, which is known for faults. If there is any hesitation when adjusting either, the switch assembly is likely faulty.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement switch assembly to resolve the issue. If this is covered by warranty, BMW will repair it free of charge; otherwise, you will be responsible for the repair costs.

Broken Isofix Mounting Point
Problem:
Fitting a child seat onto the Isofix mountings has become impossible, and the child seats move more than they should.
Solution:
This should only affect your X6 if it was manufactured between March 2014 and April 2019. If you want to use a child seat safely, then you'll need to order a new set of mounting points from BreakerYard.

Overheating Engine
Problem:
The engine is overheating, the warning light is on, and there might be leaks from the exhaust pipe.
Solution:
If your X6 was built between March 2014 and May 2017, there's a strong chance that it has a faulty EGR cooler fitted. We have replacements in stock that you can order, and fitting is relatively straightforward.

Loss of Brake Power
Problem:
The brakes take too long to bring the car to a complete stop.
Solution:
If your X6 was manufactured between February and October 2020, it is likely that your integrated brake system hydraulic unit is faulty. You will need to browse our parts page for a new unit and install the replacement.

Engine Won't Turn
Problem:
When you turn the ignition key, the engine attempts to start but won't turn over.
Solution:
It's very likely that the battery cables on your 48V starter generator were not properly secured during production. This issue should only affect those X6s manufactured between July 2020 and November 2020. If you're fortunate, you may be able to tighten the screw connection on the starter generator. If it has burnt out due to the fault, then you'll need to order a new starter generator from our parts list.
