Citroen C3 Common Problems and Solutions
Bumpy Ride
Problem:
Driving your C3 is much less comfortable due to excessive bumping, particularly on uneven surfaces.
Solution:
This is a common problem in early C3 models, and you should check your suspension. If it is damaged, you will need to buy and fit a replacement from us. It might seem like a big job, but it's actually easier than you might think and much cheaper than taking it to a mechanic.

Car Heater Not Working (All Petrol Models)
Problem:
The car heater isn't working properly and doesn't warm up, even when you're driving.
Solution:
This issue is caused by a faulty electronic thermostat. You will need to order a new one, which you can do via our Citroen C3 parts page. Then, you will need to remove the faulty unit and replace it. This task can take just a few minutes and should ensure your car heater works properly.

Sensodrive gearbox problem
Problem:
There are many known problems with the sensodrive gearbox. One of the most common issues is with gear changing. The main problem is that the changes do not happen as smoothly as they should. This is usually caused by a software fault.
Solution:
Having the gearbox software reprogrammed should resolve the issue.

Heater problems
Problem:
A common issue with the Citroen C3 is the heaters not blowing hot air, only emitting cold air on all settings. This problem is caused by a fault with the air distributor flap.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement air distributor flap to resolve the issue.

Electrical problems
Problem:
The C3 is known to experience electrical problems, which can range from an issue with the lights to a fault with the central locking. The common cause of electrical issues in this car is related to the control unit.
Solution:
Re-programming the control unit should fix these issues; otherwise, it will be caused by a specific electrical part itself.

Engine misfiring/irregular idling
Problem:
If your car is experiencing engine misfiring or irregular idling, then the injector sensors are known to fail on the C3. The problem in this video is injector related.
Solution:
Replacing the injector sensor will fix the problem.

Bumper fitting issue
Problem:
If you notice that the bumper on your C3 does not fit correctly, this is a known issue with these cars, especially with early models. The problem is caused by poorly fitted seals.
Solution:
Citroen fixes this problem under warranty, and it has also been known for them to resolve this issue as a goodwill gesture for cars no longer under warranty.

No Engine Power on Hills
Problem:
You're experiencing a total loss of power when driving uphill in 2nd or 3rd gear. You might also notice the clutch slipping during those hill climbs.
Solution:
This could be a simple matter of just replacing your spark plugs. If that doesn't resolve the issue, you should check your ignition coils and your clutch. If your ignition coils seem worn, then you'll need to buy a replacement from our Citroën pages. In the worst-case scenario, you will need to replace the entire clutch system.

Electric Parking Brake Fault Warning Light is Illuminated
Problem:
Even while driving, your electric parking brake warning light remains on.
Solution:
This is a software issue. You will need to take your C3 to a Citroen dealer, who will erase the fault and fully reprogramme the software. This problem is common with the Citroen C4 Picasso, but it can also occur in C3 models.

Sound of Water When Turning Corners
Problem:
Every time you turn a corner, you can hear the swishing of water. You might also find a puddle on the driver's side footwell.
Solution:
Your first step should be to ensure all of the car's water channels are clean and free of debris. If they are, check your heater motor for any water. If water is present inside the heater motor, the fuses may malfunction. In that case, the issue is most likely a blocked pollen filter. You can prevent this by taking the occasional long drive. If it has already occurred, you will need to purchase a replacement filter, but fitting it yourself is very straightforward and only takes about 20 minutes.

Loss of Brake Power
Problem:
Your brake pedal tension drops, causing longer stopping times.
Solution:
There's a strong likelihood that this issue is simply the brake vacuum pump coming loose from the timing belt. If that's the case, you'll need to replace both the vacuum pump and the timing belt, both of which you can order directly from us.

Rattling Noise When Driving
Problem:
When you're driving, you can hear a rattling noise coming from the front of the car.
Solution:
This issue is usually only with the C3 Puretech; you'll need to check the shock absorber spring. You should find that the rubber sleeving in which the shock absorber sits has come loose, causing the spring to contact the unit. All you need to do is leverage the spring upwards and reinsert the rubber sleeving. This will fix the problem.

Misaligned Steering
Problem:
The steering wheel isn't properly aligned, which makes driving feel more awkward and uncomfortable.
Solution:
Your first step is to adjust the steering alignment. This is something you can do easily yourself. However, you might also need to replace the front tyres as they could have become more worn due to the misalignment. You can quickly and easily purchase spare tyres using our handy search guide.
