Citroen C8 Common Problems and Solutions
Starting Problems (2.0-Ltr and 2,2-Ltr HDi Models)
Problem:
You're experiencing difficulty starting the engine.
Solution:
A common issue with earlier models of the C8 is caused by water ingress into the timing belt covers. Water enters the covers via the scuttle panel and leads to timing belt wear. Citroen has released a water drain channel that can be fitted to the underside of the coolant expansion tank. We usually have the water drain channels available for order, but you might also need to replace some camshaft drive system components.

Rough Running and Rattling Sound
Problem:
When you're running at low revs or idling, the engine stalls. There may also be white smoke coming from the exhaust, but only when you're around 1800 rpm.
Solution:
Start by checking the EGR, as it is a very low-cost part available in our online store and is easy to install, which anyone can do. However, the problem could also be caused by an issue with one of the two inlet manifolds. If replacing the EGR doesn't solve the problem, it’s best to visit a Citroen dealer for a full diagnostic check.

Sliding Door Opens When Driving
Problem:
You're driving along when the sliding door unexpectedly opens without warning.
Solution:
If your C8 was built between April and December 2002, the safety lock on the sliding doors is susceptible to incorrect electrical signals. You will need to install a replacement ECU for the door, which can be ordered directly from our online shop.

Electric window failure

Window wiper failure
Problem:
These vehicles have been prone to window wiper failures. It is common for the window wipers to not function properly, sometimes not working at all. This issue is caused by a faulty wiper linkage.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement wiper linkage to fix the issue.

Heavy rear tyre wear
Problem:
You may be experiencing a problem with the suspension if you notice that the rear tyre wear is very heavy. Then, this issue is usually caused by a fault with the rear suspension.
Solution:
You will need someone to identify exactly which suspension part is causing the problem and replace the faulty component. If the tyres have less than the legal 1.6mm tyre depth over 75% of the tyre, the tyre will need replacing as well.

Door handle trim peeling
Problem:
The chrome trim on the door handles is known for peeling off on this vehicle.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement chrome trim to resolve this issue. It might be more worthwhile to replace the door handles. You will find these parts here at Breakeryard.

Side sliding door issues
Problem:
The side sliding doors on the C8 are known to stick. They can be quite hesitant and may not operate as smoothly as they should. This issue is caused by the runners failing, and if not addressed early, it can lead to problems with the motor. The video below shows how the doors should open:
Solution:
You need to replace the runners to fix this issue. The runners are built into the body of this vehicle, which means you'll need to touch up the paint when replacing them. If you've left this for a while, the motor might have been damaged and will also need replacing.

Strong Smell of Fuel
Problem:
The car has a strong smell of fuel, and it might begin to stall.
Solution:
If your C8 was manufactured between March 2006 and January 2008, it probably has a weak diesel fuel return pipe. You can find it attached to the inlet manifold. It is likely to have worn significantly and will need replacing. We always keep the replacement pipes in stock, ensuring quick delivery.

Increased Brake pedal Travel
Problem:
You need to press your brake pedal further and further, although still applying the same amount of pressure.
Solution:
Inspect your brake hoses. One or more may be touching the heat shield that protects the exhaust system. This often causes a leak in the brake circuit. Start by adjusting the heat shield so it no longer contacts the affected brake hose. In most cases, you'll need to replace the worn or damaged brake hose with a new one from our parts list.

Intermittent Loss of Power
Problem:
You experience occasional power loss, and the engine management light intermittently illuminates. You will also notice the DPF filter fault light turning on.
Solution:
The issue here is that a Citroen dealer often misdiagnoses the problem as a faulty fuel sensor and charges you to replace it. Usually, the fault is simply a lack of DPF fluid, which you can easily top up to resolve the issue.
