Fiat 126 Common Problems and Solutions
Misfiring/loss of power
Problem:
You may come across a problem with the engine misfiring or that you are losing power rapidly when driving. This problem is usually to do with the carburetor.
Solution:
You will need to check if it is a problem with a loose carb, or if you need to adjust the carb screw to improve the air/fuel mixture, or even replace the carburetor if necessary. If not sure, get someone who knows what they are doing to have a look.

Brake problems
Problem:
If you have noticed that there is a funny smell coming from under the car and that the brakes are not working properly, you most likely have a problem with the rear brake cylinder.
Solution:
You will need to replace the thermostat to resolve this issue.

Overheating/cutting out
Problem:
These vehicles are known for overheating easily which leads to them cutting out. You have to leave the car for a while before it will start again. A faulty thermostat most commonly causes this. The thermostat controls a flap on the distributor, opening further the hotter it gets. The flap is not opened when the thermostat is not working, which makes the car cut out.
Solution:
You will need to replace the thermostat to resolve this issue.

Split in window crank pulley
Problem:
It is common on the 126 for the window crank pulley to split which makes the window difficult to move upwards and downwards. In some cases, it actually makes the window unable to open.
Solution:
The pulley is riveted together very crudely, so you will need to remove this somehow (with a hammer and chisel, grinder or whatever you can use). Using some penny washers and bolting through the split wheel you can get this working again.
Difficulty level
Sunroof failure
Problem:
The fabric sunroofs are known to fail after some time, with the frame rotting and rusting away, causing leaks into the car.
Solution:
To fix this problem you will need to fit a replacement sunroof, including the frame.
