Ford Cougar Common Problems and Solutions
Front Suspension Failure
Problem:
The front of the car becomes very noticeably lower, and you can feel every bump on the road.
Solution:
The front lower wishbones on the Cougar are very prone to rapid wear and will often need to be replaced. It's usually the bushes that are worn, but it's easier to replace the whole arms with new ones from our parts list to avoid the hassle of hacking out the old bushes.

Overheating Engine (All Early Models)
Problem:
Your engine is overheating, but your head gasket seems fine.
Solution:
On early models of the Cougar, a plastic impeller was installed in the water pump. This is very prone to cracks and fractures. You can find the metal versions in our online store, and it's best to replace this impeller as quickly as possible before it leads to the inevitable head gasket crack.

AC Has Stopped Working
Problem:
Your AC is malfunctioning. It may stop working completely, or may only work on some settings. It might only blow hot air or only cold air.
Solution:
The air-con on the Cougar can be a nightmare, and it's best to install an entirely new unit. Browse our parts list for a better AC unit.

3rd Gear Crunch
Problem:
There is a crunching sound whenever you change into 3rd gear.
Solution:
The 3rd gear synchroniser ring is a known weak spot of the Cougar. The good news is that it's an easy part to install once you've dismantled the gearbox, and we always have the synchronisers in stock for easy ordering.

Brake Squeal
Problem:
You can hear a squealing sound from your rear brakes when the weather is damp.
Solution:
This is due to very impractical brake pads that were fitted on the rear of the Cougar. Order better pads directly from our parts list, and the issue will immediately resolve.

Rattling Roof Panel
Problem:
You can hear a rattling sound coming from the roof opening panel.
Solution:
The guide shoes installed on the roof opening panel are well-known for being too hard and generally unfit for purpose. Revised guide shoes were released by Ford, which you can order directly from us, and they are very easy to install.
