Ford Fusion Common Problems and Solutions
Key Stuck In Ignition
Problem:
The key is jammed in the ignition, but the car runs smoothly.
Models affected:
Solution:
Alarmingly common on the Fusion, this will either be your shifter knob sticking or a case of a bound shifter bezel. Check both parts and order the replacements from BreakerYard for quick delivery.
Stalling When Cold
Problem:
The engine starts perfectly when the engine is warm but takes multiple attempts when starting from cold.
Models affected:
Solution:
You likely have a faulty engine coolant temperature sensor. It's a fiddly part to install but perfectly doable for most people. Find a new sensor on our parts list and check some online tutorials that will show you the best way to install your replacement.
Faulty Speedometer
Problem:
Your speedometer only works occasionally.
Models affected:
Solution:
Very common on the Fusion, this will usually be caused by a worn-out speed sensor. Check around your wheels for the speed sensor, and check the wiring while you're there, as it may be a simple case of a loose connection. If the wiring is fine, then you can order a new sensor directly from our online store.
Water On Steering Column
Problem:
When the engine is running, you can see water dripping behind the dashboard and onto the steering column.
Models affected:
Solution:
This is a simple case of a worn seal on your windscreen. Locate the exact spot where water is getting in and use plastic glue to protect your car.
Swollen Lug Nuts
Problem:
The lug nuts on one or more of your wheels have swollen, making removal almost impossible.
Models affected:
Solution:
This is a design flaw by Ford. In most cars, lug nuts are just a single piece of metal, but on the Fusion, the lug nuts have an aluminium cap over the steel core. When water gets between the parts, it can freeze, causing swelling. The problem is that a standard tool won't fit the swollen nut, so you won't be able to remove the wheel when you need to. Order a set of lug nuts from our parts list and replace them yourself before this becomes an issue. It can be hard to remove them, so you'll need to have some patience and some strength.
Squeaking While Driving
Problem:
You can hear squeaking and creaking sounds whenever the car is in motion.
Models affected:
Solution:
This will tend to happen when your Fusion has a lot of miles on the clock. There are two possible causes, so you'll need to get under the car to inspect it. Check your lower control arms first, as these are the cheapest and most straightforward parts to replace, and we always have them in stock for the Fusion. If the lower control arms are fine, then the problem will be your strut assembly. You can send the car to the garage to take the strut assembly apart, but it's an expensive job. There are many online guides that will show you how to repair the strut assembly yourself.
