Hyundai i20 Common Problems and Solutions
Broken Folding Key
Problem:
Your car key has broken.
Solution:
The folding key on the i20 is notoriously fragile. The poor design causes it to fall apart far too easily. No repairs can fix the issue, and you'll have little option but to purchase a replacement.

Noisy Steering Column
Problem:
There is *excessive noise* emanating from the steering column, especially when driving on rough roads.
Solution:
Caused by insufficient lubrication on any of the contact surfaces in the engine drive gears, it only takes a little TLC. Apply lubricant to the motor drive gear and the steering column.

Steering problems
Problem:
The electric power steering in the car is known to fail, resulting in very heavy steering. This happens because the motor switches itself off to prevent overheating and from burning out. It is considered a safety feature, and the problem is expected to improve as the vehicle gets used over time.
Solution:
Take the vehicle to your dealer to see if they can repair it under warranty if the issue continues.

Folding key breaking
Problem:
The folding key is very fragile for this car; the pin that holds the key to the fob is prone to snapping.
Solution:
Hyundai should replace the key under warranty, but if they do not, you are liable for the cost of replacing the key.

Water leaks
Problem:
The windscreen and door seals on earlier models (around 2009) are prone to leaking water. If you notice any wet or damp patches on the carpets in the boot or front footwells, you should check the relevant seal for a water leak. You might also see excessive condensation build-up around the windscreen, which indicates that the windscreen seals may be failing.
Solution:
You need to replace the appropriate seals to stop the leak, and if the carpets are very wet, you should dry them to prevent dampness from developing. You should be able to have the seal replaced under warranty.

Electric window problem
Problem:
There are known issues with the i20 electric window motors failing prematurely. If you notice that one of the windows is not moving up and down smoothly, the motor is likely the cause of the problem.
Solution:
Replacing the electric window motor should resolve the problem. This is likely covered by warranty. If not, we can assist you in finding a replacement motor at a very reasonable price.

Water Droplets
Problem:
While the aircon is running, water drips to the floor on the passenger’s side.
Solution:
If you put your hands underneath and behind the glove box, you may be able to feel a small amount of water. If so, the water droplets are being caused by the drinks cooler that runs off the AC. Turn the water cooler off using the switch that can be found inside the i20’s glove box. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, then there may be an AC system blockage, and you will need a garage to investigate and clear it.
