Jaguar X Type Common Problems and Solutions
Brake Pedal Staying Down (Diesel Models)
Problem:
When you push the brake pedal down, it does not return to its normal position.
Solution:
Very common on diesel models of the X-Type, this is down to a faulty internal spring in the brake servo unit. Your best option is to go through our parts list for a replacement brake servo unit and install one without the faulty spring.
Difficulty level
Engine Stalling (2.0-ltr Models)
Problem:
The engine is stalling, and you see the error codes P1211 and P0251 on your diagnostics screen.
Solution:
You have a faulty high-pressure fuel pump which you will need to replace. We always have these available, and they are quite easy to install yourself.
Difficulty level
Engine Rumbling
Problem:
You can hear a low rumbling sound coming from the engine when you drive.
Solution:
There is a problem with your bottom crank pulley damper assembly. This can be a very expensive fix if you take the car to a mechanic, simply because it's quite a time-consuming job to do. Alternatively, order a new one from our parts list and follow a step-by-step guide that will save you a lot of cash.

Indicator Light Malfunction
Problem:
The external indicator is no longer working, but the interior indicator light is still flashing.
Solution:
It is not legal to drive a car with a broken indicator, but it's hard to know that you have a problem until someone points it out to you. X-types built between January 2001, and October 2002 have a known issue with faulty indicators, and you will need to replace yours with a new one from our parts page if you want to drive it legally.
Difficulty level
Wobbling on Corners
Problem:
The car wobbles when you are taking a corner and no longer feels precise or stable on a straight.
Solution:
The radius arm on your rear suspension will have become damaged and will need to be replaced. Browse our parts list for a replacement radius arm and install it to return to a smoother ride.
Difficulty level
Loose Front Seats
Problem:
One or both of the front seats have become looser.
Solution:
The X-Type's front seats are extremely prone to wear and tear, and they can easily work loose from their runners. You may be able to order some replacement runners from us, but in some cases, you will need to replace the entire seat if damage has been caused.
Difficulty level
Heavy Clutch
Problem:
The clutch is getting heavier to apply.
Solution:
This happens to every car eventually, but the X-Type is known to be hard on its clutch system. A heavy clutch is a sign that your entire clutch system is going to need replacing, which you need to do before it fails completely and causes additional damage to the car. We have clutch systems for the X-Type in stock and can deliver straight to you.

Automatic gearbox problems
Problem:
The automatic gearbox on the X-Type is prone to problems. If you are finding that the car is not accelerating smoothly, but there is a delay and then it surges forward, these are common gearbox problem symptoms. It may also be clunking into gear.
Solution:
This could mean a replacement gearbox. Jaguar had several service updates to try and improve reliability. We can help you find a replacement gearbox at prices which will keep you happy.

Rear suspension problems
Problem:
When you are driving round twisty roads are you noticing that the rear end does not seem to be gripping the road as well as it used to? The rear of the vehicle should grip as well as the front and if not, this issue is caused by a faulty small radius arm. Common symptoms of the problem are the rear end feeling wobbly, or loose.
Solution:
You will need to replace the small radius arm to fix the issue.
Difficulty level
Gear lever cover failure
Problem:
The gear lever cover is known for splitting on the X-Type.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement gear lever cover to fix the problem. You can search for your replacement gear lever cover here.

Cooling fan module failure
Problem:
The cooling fan module is prone to failure, particularly on pre-2003 models. If you are finding that the fan is not coming on when you turn on the air conditioning, this will be your problem.

You need to replace the cooling fan module to rectify the issue. We can help you find a replacement cooling fan module at a very low price.

Difficulty level
Rusty Suspension
Problem:
You've noticed excessive rust issues on your suspension and control arms.
Solution:
In most cases, you will be able to clean off surface rust and then apply a protective coating to prevent more buildup. If the rust has already caused a lot of damage, then you may, in rare cases, have to replace the suspension system and the control arms.
Difficulty level
Handbrake Problems (Manuals)
Problem:
When parking on an incline, the handbrake doesn't work, and the car rolls away.
Solution:
This is being caused by the brake components shrinking as they cool down, and is a common fault for manual X-Types built in the first two months of 2004. You will need to replace the entire handbrake system, which we always have in stock and can deliver to you.
Difficulty level
Uneven Braking
Problem:
The braking is uneven, and sometimes the brakes apply unexpectedly.
Solution:
If your X-Type was built between February and March 2004, then this problem is most likely caused by a faulty yaw-rate sensor (sometimes referred to as the rotational speed sensor). The sensor has degraded, and you'll need to find a replacement on our parts list and install the new one.
