Solution:

You will need to install a replacement coolant overflow bottle to fix the issue and top up the coolant.

Crankshaft bolt breaks

Problem:

A known issue on the Sorento and several other Kia models is the crankshaft bolt breaking. This can lead to various problems, including warning lights on the dashboard, starting difficulties, and even the crankshaft coming loose. Watch the video below:

Models affected:

Solution:

You need to remove the broken bolt and fit a replacement to resolve this issue. Watch this video to see how to remove the broken bolt.

Automatic gearbox problems

Problem:

The automatic gearbox on the Sorento is known for jumping out of gear. This issue is caused by a fault with the electric connectors beneath the box. Do not worry too much, as this is not as big a job as you might think.

Models affected:

Solution:

You need to disconnect the electric plugs beneath the box, clean them, and then re-grease the plugs. Re-fit the plugs, and this should resolve the issue. It is normal for this gearbox to produce a whining noise, so do not be overly concerned about it.

3

Black smoke/loss of power

Problem:

Have you noticed black smoke coming from the exhaust? Is there a loss of power when accelerating? If you answer yes to both questions, it is a good indication that the intercooler hoses are failing on the vehicle. This has been known to occur on the Sorento.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to replace the intercooler hoses to resolve the issue.

Engine Cuts Out

Problem:

The engine has stalled, and the warning light is on.

Jerking While Changing Gear

Problem:

The car jerks forwards whenever you change gear.

Models affected:

Solution:

If you take the car to a Kia dealer, there's a good chance they'll tell you it only needs a system reset. However, this won't solve the problem because it is caused by a fault in the transmission box. We can supply a replacement transmission box, and you can carry out the repair quite easily yourself.

Doors Not Opening

Problem:

You cannot open the doors from outside.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is the result of a new design in 2011, and it caused many problems with the doors not opening. The fault lies with a broken spring inside the locking mechanism. You will need to open the sealed locking device to replace the spring. It is quite tricky to do, but we have the replacement spring in stock for you to order.

Difficulty level

3

Engine Failure

Problem:

The engine appears to have just died.

Models affected:

Solution:

Regrettably, this is quite common in the Sorento and has impacted many drivers. Catastrophic engine failure around the 115,000-mile mark does occur. The only solution is to order a completely new engine from us and replace the broken one.

Clunk Noise When Reversing

Problem:

Whenever you reverse, you hear a clunking noise, but the car still drives smoothly.

Models affected:

Solution:

Take the car to a spacious area and test your driveline components by first driving forwards in a large circle at low speed, then reversing in the opposite direction. If you hear a clunking noise, it is likely that your CV joints are worn out, and you will need to replace them. Order CV joints from the BreakerYard store, remove the worn ones, and install the new ones.

Car Shifts Out of Park

Problem:

The car releases itself from park and will roll if on an incline.

Models affected:

Solution:

Difficulty level

The seat belt locking mechanism isn't functioning properly and won't secure.
