Lexus SC 430 Common Problems and Solutions
Steering Wheel Vibration
Problem:
The steering wheel is vibrating excessively and may even drift while you are driving.
Solution:
This could have a few causes. First, check your top suspension arms at the rear, as they often wear out quite quickly. You can easily find replacements on our parts list. If they appear fine, then you might have worn front wheel bearings, which is a straightforward fix with some new bearings. If the driving feels particularly rough and neither of those are the issue, then you’ll probably need to replace the front control arm bushes.

Juddery Gear Changes
Problem:
The gears judder when you change to a new gear.
Solution:
It’s probable that your coolant is contaminated. You’ll need to flush the entire system and refill it with a clear fluid.

Car Not Starting
Problem:
The engine won’t start, and you can hear a buzzing or clicking sound coming from it when you try to start the car.
Solution:
This is just a worn-out starter motor. The issue is that in the SC430, you need to remove the inlet manifold to access the starter motor. This makes it a more complicated job than in other cars. However, it still only takes about 20 minutes, and you can always order new starter motors directly from BreakerYard.

Overheating Engine
Problem:
Your engine is overheating, and white smoke is emanating from the exhaust. Your oil appears to have a milky-white colour.
Solution:
This has been caused by a lack of coolant, which has led to your head gasket failing. Your only option now is to browse our parts list for a new head gasket and replace the faulty one. This is a big job, but it’s much more straightforward than you might think, and there are plenty of guides available online.

Creaking Suspension
Problem:
You can hear a squeaking noise from the front of the car when driving over uneven surfaces and speed bumps.
Solution:
Inspect your front sway bar bushes, as they may have become worn. Order new ones from BreakerYard, and ensure you secure them tightly.

Squeaking Front Seats
Problem:
You can hear a squeaking noise emanating from one or both of your front seats.
Solution:
The squeaking noise occurs when the vehicle floor pan contacts the seat track locating pins. It’s an easy fix—just remove the pins in contact with the pan.

Electric Boot Release Malfunction
Problem:
Pressing the electric boot release button does not open the boot.
Solution:
You might be missing a ground wire, which means the boot mechanism isn't receiving the signal to open. You can purchase a new ground wire from our parts page, and several online guides will show you how and where to fit it.

Weak Brakes
Problem:
It’s taking too long to come to a complete halt.
Solution:
The brakes on the SC430 are known to be a weak point, but it’s a design flaw rather than a fault. Most owners will replace the brake system promptly, which is why we always have them in stock and can deliver quickly.

Slow Roof Mechanism
Problem:
The roof is taking increasingly longer to fold back.
Solution:
This is a common problem with the SC430. The roof should take no more than 25 seconds to fold back completely; if yours takes longer, the roof motor may be beginning to wear out. You can order a replacement straight from our parts list, and fitting it is challenging but achievable.
