Door lock problem
Problem:
Are you having difficulty unlocking the doors? The locks on this car are known for getting clogged up with dirt, which results in the rollers not being able to move properly. On many occasions, the locks will lock, but will not unlock due to this problem.
Solution:
You can blow out the dirt with oil being forced through an airline, but if this does not work you will be best purchasing a replacement lock. We can help you find a replacement lock at a very low price.

Water leaking into front footwells
Problem:
If you have wet carpets in the front footwell, a leak between the bulkhead and windscreen is common on the 121. This leak is caused by a lack of sealant. Ford provided an additional plastic cover to put underneath the bonnet, on the nearside of the bulkhead.
Solution:
As mentioned above, Ford provided a plastic cover to fit under the bonnet on the nearside of the bulkhead. You could either purchase this part, or you could apply some silicone sealant to the area where the water is leaking. You will also need to dry out the carpets to avoid dampness setting in.

Smoke From Dashboard
Problem:
There is a burning smell inside the car, and there may be smoke coming from the dashboard or the ignition mechanism.
Solution:
This is being caused by an accumulation of carbonised grease between the contact points in the ignition switch. That buildup reduces the insulation performance inside the switch. Replacing the ignition switch is a fiddly job but perfectly doable, and we always have replacement switches available to order.

Loss of Brake Power
Problem:
You have to apply more brake pressure, and the clutch is much harder to press down.
Solution:
The clutch system hydraulic hoses on early models of the Mazda 121 were manufactured from a material that contained mineral oil. The brakes and the clutch share a reservoir fluid, and it’s that fluid that gets contaminated. You’ll need to order new seals for the brake master cylinder from our parts page and then flush the original fluid before replacing it. You will also have to order new clutch hoses, but these are easy to install.
