Mazda RX-7 Common Problems and Solutions
ABS Light Illuminated
Problem:
The ABS light flashes on now and again. There is no noticeable reduction in brake performance.
Solution:
This is likely to be a loose ABS ring on the rear axle, a common problem for the RX7. You’ll need to browse our parts list for a new ABS ring, but you may also have to order a drive axle if it has become damaged as a result of the loose ring.

Oil Leak
Problem:
You are going through more oil than you should be.
Solution:
While there are lots of locations where an oil leak can form, in the RX7, the most likely spot is between the rear stationary gear and the O-ring. You’ll find these at the rear of the engine. Although this is an easy spare part to install, and you can order them for quick delivery from our online store, you still have to remove the entire transmission to access the components.

Intermittent Non-Starter
Problem:
The engine doesn’t always start but cranks without a problem.
Solution:
It’s likely that the main relay is faulty. This could be due to age or corrosion, but in either case, you will have to order a new relay from BreakerYard and install the replacement before it starts causing additional problems.

Surging and Hesitant Engine
Problem:
The engine feels hesitant and regularly surges.
Solution:
Check under the intake at the ground that’s positioned on the top of the engine block. It’s either broken or it’s become too corroded to function correctly. If it’s just corroded, then you can try cleaning it off and applying a protector, but in most cases, the damage will have been done, and you’ll have little choice but to find a replacement in our store.

Turbo Problems
Problem:
The turbo is no longer working, or only kicks in occasionally.
Solution:
The most notorious drawback of the RX7 is the ‘rats nest’ of wires that make up the complex system of vacuum lines that control the twin-turbo system. Ideally, you should replace all of these with more durable synthetic rubber hoses before they cause a turbo problem. If you haven’t done that and your turbo no longer works properly, then you're going to need to order an entire twin-turbo system from our parts list, including the hoses. It’s also worth replacing your coolant hoses at the same time and checking that the engine wiring harness is not worn out.
