Mercedes-Benz E Class Common Problems and Solutions
Rust problems
Problem:
Any E-Class car without metallic paint is prone to paint chips and corrosion. If you notice rust spots, they need to be treated promptly to prevent further spreading. The boot handle and wheel arches are the most common areas for rust on the E-Class. There have been several complaints about poor paintwork on this model.
Solution:
You should have this seen to as soon as possible to prevent any further damage. If the car is still under warranty, Mercedes will repair it free of charge; otherwise, you will be responsible for fixing the issue. Have someone experienced deal with the rust.

Heating problems
Problem:
The heating system on the E-Class is known to produce a clicking noise during operation. If you hear this clicking sound from any of the heating settings, it is caused by a fault with the stepper motor.
Solution:
You will need to install a replacement stepper motor to resolve the issue.

Rough idling
Problem:
If you notice the engine idling very roughly, the throttle body is likely clogged with carbon build-up. You will probably also experience a lack of power when accelerating, along with rough idling.
Solution:
You will need to clean the throttle body to resolve this issue. Use a toothbrush and some throttle body cleaner for this task. You might also want to clean the MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner to enhance performance. Watch the video below to learn how to access the MAF sensor and throttle body, then view part 2 to see how to clean the throttle body.

Window Closing Unexpectedly
Problem:
One of your car windows suddenly closes on its own.
Solution:
Your window regulator is wearing out, and the window is closing automatically due to a safety feature. You will need to remove the door panels and replace the regulator, which you can find easily on our parts list. You should also lubricate the track while the door panels are off.

Wipers Stop Working
Problem:
Your front or rear windscreen wipers have ceased functioning.
Solution:
This could be either your wiper motor or a blown fuse. This is a very common fault on E Class vehicles because the wiper motor draws too much electrical current. Order a new wiper motor and a replacement fuse from our online store and fit them yourself easily.

Malfunctioning Headlights
Problem:
Your headlights are no longer working.
Solution:
The headlights on the E Class are known for premature burnout. Although this is common, there is no real fix other than replacing the entire headlight units. You can find these easily on our parts page for the E Class.

Unresponsive Steering
Problem:
The steering is becoming less responsive. You might also hear a rattling noise coming from the steering rack while driving. The car may occasionally misfire, and acceleration takes longer to respond.
Solution:
The camshaft adjuster on the E Class is a known weak point and is susceptible to premature wear and fatigue. You can order a new adjuster directly from our parts kits, and installation is a task that takes around 10 minutes.

Engine Cuts Out
Problem:
The engine is running fine but then suddenly cuts out.
Solution:
This is an electrical wiring issue affecting the fuel pump. Check under your rear seat bench for any damaged or disconnected wires, and replace them if necessary.

Loss of Engine Power
Problem:
Your engine has lost power, with no apparent cause.
Solution:
Don't panic; this isn't truly a problem with your engine. Any E Class manufactured before May 2016 can experience a sudden loss of power due to an engine management software issue. A quick update from a Mercedes dealer will resolve the problem and is usually free.

SBC Warning Light
Problem:
Your sensotronic brake control (SBC) warning light has illuminated on your dashboard. Your brake performance has noticeably declined.
Solution:
Unfortunately, you will need to replace the entire SBC unit. This is a very complex DIY task, but there are some online guides available that can assist you through the process if you choose to do it yourself. We do have SBC units in stock for quick delivery.

Car Vibrations
Problem:
The car has begun to vibrate excessively. You might also notice unusual smells and strange noises emanating from the engine.
Solution:
Your differential is probably leaking from either its cover or its seals. You'll need to reseal it, but this is a quick job that anyone can do. You can order a new differential seal and cover directly from BreakerYard.

Repeatedly Dead Battery
Problem:
You can't start your car and realise you've got a dead battery. You replace the battery, but it still dies quickly.
Solution:
The airmatic pump in the E Class is a fantastic upgrade that significantly enhances ride quality. Sadly, it often develops a relay fault, causing it to stick. This means it runs constantly, even when the engine is off. Consequently, it drains the battery severely, making it impossible to start your car. You should check our parts list for a new airmatic pump, which is a fairly simple part to install.
Difficulty level
Rough Suspension
Problem:
Driving feels very bumpy, particularly on rough surfaces.
Solution:
The bushings on the front suspension of the E Class are known weak spots. They tend to wear out sooner than expected, leading to oil leaks and reduced suspension performance. Order new front suspension bushes from our online store and check your tyres in case replacements are needed as well. However, if you own the E550, this issue could stem from the air compressor or the rear air suspension springs, which are also known to fail prematurely. You can order replacements from our parts list as needed.

Sat-Nav Stress
Problem:
Your sat-nav won't accept only the first five digits of a postcode.
Solution:
This is one of the most well-known issues with the E Class, and Mercedes generally offer little assistance. You need to update the sat-nav software, and Mercedes has decided to charge a hefty fee for this service. Most owners choose to ignore the built-in sat-nav and simply install a removable, third-party version, which we always have available to order.
