Mercedes-Benz Vaneo Common Problems and Solutions
Alarm Noise On Start
Problem:
There is an alarm beep occurring whenever you start the car. It's persistent and only stops when you stop the car. The sound seems to be coming from the rear of the car.
Solution:
This will either be a worn-out fuel pump or a leak in the fuel tank system. Inspect the pump for any obvious signs of wear and order a replacement as needed. If you can see any cracks or holes in the fuel tank system, then you may be able to seal them yourself. If they are too large, then new hoses are available in our online store.

Doors Unlocking
Problem:
When you're driving, the doors are automatically unlocking, causing the interior light to come on.
Solution:
If you're lucky, this is nothing more than a misadjusted door latch, which is very common on later models of the Vaneo. You can find a new door latch on our parts list, and installation is very straightforward. If replacing the latch doesn't resolve the issue, then you will need to head to a Mercedes dealer for a full diagnostic check.

Battery Warning Light
Problem:
The warning light for the battery is illuminating, telling you that the battery is not charging.
Solution:
It's likely that your alternator has burnt out. Installation is tricky but very doable, and we always have new alternators in stock for easy ordering.

Non-Starter
Problem:
You turn the ignition key, and the lights all flash on, but the engine doesn't start.
Solution:
This is very common on the Vaneo and is usually a burnt-out starter motor. Unfortunately, replacing the starter motor is a big job because you need to remove the engine to access it. However, if you have the time and the patience, this is a very doable job. Order a new starter motor direct from us for quick delivery.

Automatic gearbox problem
Problem:
The shift valves are known for failing on the automatic gearboxes. If these valves fail you will be finding that the engine management warning light is flashing on the dashboard. You will most likely not be getting out of second gear and/or will not be able to go above 50mph.
Solution:
This issue can mean that the gearbox needs to be rebuilt. Depending on how much this will cost, you might be cheaper purchasing a replacement gearbox. We can help you find one at a very low price.

Water pump failure
Problem:

Sliding door runner rusting
Problem:
The recess that the side sliding door runs along is prone to rusting.
Solution:
As this part is awkward to get into, there is a possibility that you may need to remove the runner to treat the rust. However, you may be able to rub down the affected area if the rust is not too bad and then treat it to stop any further corrosion. If the rust is too bad, you will need to fit a replacement runner.
