MINI Mini Clubman Common Problems and Solutions

Rough Engine Idle

Problem:

The engine is idling roughly, and you are using more fuel than usual. The check engine light may also be on.

Models affected:

Solution:

It's likely that you haven't been topping up your oil regularly enough, which has led to variable valve timing (VVT) issues. Try replacing the solenoid for the VVT first as this is a very easy job, and you can find solenoids at a very low cost on our parts page. If replacing the VVT solenoid doesn't resolve the issue, then you're going to need a new VVT actuator.

Overheating Engine

Problem:

The engine has started to overheat very quickly, and there may be signs of a coolant leak on the ground.

Models affected:

Solution:

The Mini Clubman sits very low to the ground, which means it's extremely common for kerbs to damage the radiator supports and the main coolant hose. Check both if your engine has started to overheat quickly, and replace with new ones from our parts list as needed.

No Rear Parking Alert

Problem:

You are no longer getting the alarm sound that tells you when you are too close to an object when reversing.

Models affected:

Solution:

The rear parking sensor is a major issue for the Clubman, and there doesn't seem to be any way to resolve it other than installing a new sensor. We always have sensors for the Clubman available to order, and it's an easy DIY job.

AC Failure

Problem:

Your aircon has stopped working or is extremely slow to go from the hot setting to the cool setting.

Models affected:

Solution:

The AC unit on the Clubman is a bit of a weak spot, but you shouldn't have to replace the entire unit. In most cases, this will just be a matter of replacing the AC fan, which is very prone to premature wear. Browse our parts list for a new fan and check out some online guides if you've never done this fiddly job before.

Cracked Windscreen

Problem:

You have a crack on your windscreen.

Models affected:

Solution:

The Mini Clubman is particularly prone to windscreen chips, and they aren't something that you can ignore. Chips and cracks will always get larger over time, and they can eventually lead to an MOT failure. There are plenty of kits available that can help you seal chips and cracks, but in serious cases, you may find it easier to simply order a brand new windscreen from BreakerYard.

Loss Of Turbocharger (1.6-Litre Diesels)

Problem:

Complete loss of turbocharger power and a general drop in overall performance.

Models affected:

Solution:

This was such a big issue for Mini that they redesigned many of the engine parts to tackle it. The problem is that excessive carbon build-up is occurring, and it's causing serious damage to the oil pump, pickup pipe, and turbocharger. Unfortunately, you're going to have to replace all of these parts with the modified version. We have all of the newly designed parts available to order.

Rumbling Engine When Accelerating (Estates)

Problem:

Your oil pressure is extremely high, and the engine makes an odd rumbling sound when you accelerate.

Models affected:

Solution:

The crankshaft bearings on the Clubman estate are extremely susceptible to premature wear and are going to need to be replaced. If you don't replace them quickly enough, then you're going to cause a lot of serious damage to the rest of the engine. This was the cause of a recall, so if you are affected by it, then a Mini dealer should replace the bearings for you for free. If they don't, then you can have new bearings delivered by us and easily install them yourself.
