The Cabstar was a popular truck across the UK and Europe where it was manufactured in a few guises since the 1960s. There was two generations of Datsun Cabstar and three generations of Nissan Cabstar.

First generation Datsun Cabstar (1968 - 1976)

The original Datsun Cabstar replaced the Cablight. Known as the F20, the first generation Cabstar was mid-engined and was at first only available with a D12-1,189 cc petrol engine with a 56 hp output.

In 1970 Datsun introduced the J13-1,299 cc 67 hp petrol engine and added a new front grille and horizontal chrome bars to the Cabstar. Another engine, the 77hp J15-1,483 cc petrol engine was available from 1971.

Second generation Datsun Cabstar (1976 - 1982)

The second generation Datsun Cabstar was launched in 1976 in the UK with a choice of either a Nissan H20-1,982 cc 99 hp petrol engine or a SD22 64 hp diesel engine. A year later, minor improvements were made to the Cabstar, and in 1979 the front end was modernised and the engines improved to meet new emissions regulations.

Datsun F22 Cabstar (1982 - 1984) / Nissan Cabstar F22 (1984 - 1992)

The F22 Cabstar was first available in February 1982. It was built specifically for the European market with a more stable body which made bigger trailer loads (up to 3.5 tonnes) possible. The cab sat directly above the engine, which equated to high maneuverability and a longer loading area for the same external length.

From 1984 the F22 Cabstar was marketed as a Nissan Cabstar when the Japanese automobile manufacturer chose to remove the Datsun name from the market. The Nissan Cabstar was available with either the Z20 1,952 cc 82 hp petrol engine or the SD25 2,488 cc 72 hp diesel. Further engines were released over the years, including a revised Z16 1,595 cc petrol engine with fuel injection. All-wheel drive Nissan Cabstars were also available in the 1980s.

A 1990 update brought about a slightly revised interior, anti-lock brakes as standard, and a 1.5 ton payload variant - the CabstarE.

Nissan Cabstar F23 (1992 - 2007)

The next Nissan Cabstar to be available on the market was the F23, which was launched in 1992. Two turbo diesel engines (75 hp and 90 hp) were available and buyers could choose a payload of either 1 or 1.5 tonnes. Come 1995, the TD23 and TD25 engines were replaced by a 2,470 cc 82 hp turbo diesel and the design of the front grille was changed.

In 1997, the BD30 2,953 cc direct injection diesel engine producing either 106 hp or 120 hp was introduced. An update in 1999 brought with it minor revisions to the radiator grille and bumper, design changes in the interior and a driver airbag as an optional extra. Additional payload variants of 1.3 tonnes and 2 tonnes were also introduced.

In 2002, the TD25 engine was removed from the list. On the safety front, the driver''s airbag became standard and the passenger airbag was an optional extra. Before production of the F23 ceased, minor technical improvements were available on the models built from 2004 onwards.

Nissan Cabstar F24 (2007 - 2013)

Launched in 2007, the Nissan Cabstar F24 was available with two common rail diesel engines; a 2.5l Renault engine with 110 to 136 hp or a 3.0l Nissan engine with 130 to 150 hp. Each was available with either a five- or six-speed manual gearbox. The F24 came with a choice of single or double cab and in flatbed or tipper form.

For the more environmentally-conscious an electric version was sold in the form of the Renault Maxity Electric. With a 64 hp output, the lithium-ion battery had a range of about 100km from a 7 hour charge.

Nissan NT400 Cabstar (2014 - Present)

The new Nissan NT400 Cabstar is a distinct European development. It''s not a completely new truck as the cab comes from the NT500 and the instrument panel and side plates have been taken from the Cabstar. The NT400 is available currently as a tipper, dropside or box van and the cabin is wider with a raised roof that creates more space and increases driver comfort.
