Now in its third generation, the Nissan Navara has been a successful venture for Nissan throughout the world, popular in many different markets. The Navara has won a number of awards, including Best Pickup 2005 at the Professional Van & Light Truck Magazine Awards.

D22 Series Nissan Navara (1997 - 2004)

1997 was the year that Nissan introduced the Frontier as a replacement for its existing Nissan Hardbody Truck. It was initially offered with a four cylinder engine branded as the KA24DE, although a V6 option was added in 1999. For Europe and Australia, the Frontier was known as the Navara. Shortly after launch a four-door version was designed and developed, called the Crew Cab. All North American Nissans were produced at the company''s plant in Smyrna, Tennessee.

The Navara was designed to be a compact pick up, and remained on the Nissan lineup for many years in many different countries, where it was known as the NP300, Pickup, Frontier and Navara D22.

D40 Series Nissan Navara (2004 - 2014)

At the 2004 North American International Auto Show Nissan launched the next gen D40 series version of the Navara. With the Mk1 considered a compact, the second gen Navara moved more into the midsize pickup market - similar to its rival the Toyota Tacoma. The new Nissan F-Alpha platform was used for this build, with exterior styling that took inspiration from Nissan''s large Titan truck. The new design utilised a fully boxed ladder frame. US production moved from Nissan''s plant in Smyrna to Canton, Mississippi.

Engine range for the Navara came from a 2.5 litre diesel, or a higher-powered version with 403 N·m (297 lb·ft) of torque. For vehicles produced after September 2006 a 174 bhp engine was introduced to meet new Euro engine compliance regulations. Four trim levels were available, including the S, SE, Outlaw and Aventura. The high quality Aventura trim came with leather seats, climate control, sat nav and other extras as standard. For European Navaras from the model year 2010 Nissan made some subtle design changes, including a less pronounced grille and subtle headlight changes.

D23 Series Nissan Navara (2014 - Present)

2014 saw the introduction of the latest Navara pickup for non-US markets. This series will also see production start at Nissan''s new plant in Samut Prakan, Thailand. For certain markets, Nissan made sure to emphasise that the D23 series was not a replacement for the earlier D40 vehicle, which is still popular. European models feature a new 2.3 litre engine, shared from the Nissan NV400.

The motoring media praised the Navara for its style and competitive pricing when it comes to the wider pickup market, as well as its powerful diesel engines. However, the Navara does not rank well when it comes to safety. In 2008 it received a one-star ranking with a strikethrough during Euro NCAP safety testing. Nissan responded with upgraded software to rectify issues including insufficient seatbelt restraint and delayed airbag deployment, and during retests by Euro NCAP its score was updated to three stars.
