Nissan Pathfinder Common Problems and Solutions
Engine Stalled And Doesn’t Restart
Problem:
You're driving when the engine suddenly stalls. Now, the engine won't restart.
Solution:
The contacts in the engine control module (ECM) and the ignition relay that’s in the IPDM have likely been contaminated by silicon oxide. The ECM and the ignition relay will need to be replaced, which is a fiddly DIY job, but you can easily find the parts you need in our store, and there are multiple online guides available to help you install them.

Driver’s Power Seat Harness Fault
Problem:
The driver’s power seat harness has become trapped between the seat lifter mechanism and the metal seat bracket.
Solution:
The longer that you leave this, the more damage is going to be caused to your harness. Eventually, the driver's power seat will stop working. In some cases, the base for the power seat will self-activate, greatly increasing the chance of an accident. You have to separate the harness from where it’s trapped, and if it’s become too damaged, then you can find a new harness in our online store.

Whining Power Steering
Problem:
Your power steering has started to make a loud whining sound when in use.
Solution:
This is a very problematic fault that Nissan is largely ignoring. Some drivers have managed to resolve the problem by fitting a new insulator on the power steering module, which you can order directly from our parts list. You can try taking the Pathfinder to a Nissan dealer, but they are likely to call the noise just a normal operation sound.

Shuddering Gearbox
Problem:
The gearbox has started to shudder whenever you press the accelerator.
Solution:
This is most likely going to be a computer programming problem, which Nissan is well aware of. Head to a Nissan dealer and have your computer checked over and your software updated as needed.

Fuel Level Issues
Problem:
Your fuel gauge is giving temperamental readings, and the check engine light is on.
Solution:
This will only be a worn-out or faulty fuel level sensor. This is a very inexpensive part to order from BreakerYard, and installation is a simple job that takes less than five minutes.

Suspension problems
Problem:
When you are driving over speed bumps, or rough surfaces you may notice a knocking noise which is caused by a failure with the tension rod bushes. These bushes are connected to the lower control arm.
Solution:
If you fit replacement tension rod bushes, this will fix your problem.
Difficulty level
Power door locking problems
Problem:
If you are having problems with the power door locks, then it is usually due to a known issue with the power door lock actuator.
Solution:
The first thing to do is to clean the connectors by removing the switch. This should sort the problem out. If not, you will need to fit a replacement actuator to resolve the issue.
Difficulty level
Clunking noise from front end when cornering
Problem:
If you are hearing a clunking, or squealing noise when you have the steering wheel at full lock during cornering, then it is a problem with the plastic steering stops being worn down, or breaking off. The noise is caused by metals rubbing against each other.
Solution:
You can try to apply some grease to the affected area, or fitting replacement steering stops will fix the problem.
Difficulty level
Headlight problems
Problem:
If you are having problems with the headlights either not working at all, only one light working or they are not operating as they should. The common cause of the problem is with the headlight switch inside the turn signal lever.
Solution:
You can remove the turn signal lever and clean the contacts, which will fix the problem. If this is too much hassle, you can order a replacement turn signal lever with our breakers.
Difficulty level
Fuel and temp gauges problems
Problem:
It is common for the Pathfinder to suffer with fuel problems, or temperature gauges not working. This is caused by a failure with the voltage regulator behind the dashboard.
Solution:
Replacing the voltage regulator will sort the problem out.

Engine Rattle When Idling
Problem:
You can hear a rattling sound from the engine, and then there is a general drop in performance. The engine may even start to misfire often, and the check engine light might turn on.
Solution:
The timing chain in later models of the Pathfinder is prone to premature wear, usually when you hit the 102,000-mile point. Replacing a worn timing chain is a big job, but it’s much more wallet-friendly to order a new belt from our parts list and fit it yourself than hand the car over to a mechanic.

Loose Brake Pedal
Problem:
Your brake pedal feels very loose, and the stopping distance has become longer.
Solution:
This doesn’t affect a massive amount of Pathfinders, but it’s a defect that you can’t ignore. The clevis pin will come loose from the brake pedal and brake booster input rod assembly. It’s caused by a missing clevis pin securing clip, which you can now order directly from us for quick delivery. Reattach the clevis pin and secure it into place with the new clip.
