Nissan Patrol GR Common Problems and Solutions
Differential seals broken
Problem:
The differential seals on the Patrol are known to fail.
Solution:
To check if these seals are damaged, turn the steering wheel fully lock to lock and look behind the centre of the wheels for a large round rubber component. If this rubber part has a lot of oil or grease on it, you will need to replace the differential seal to resolve the issue.

Engine management warning light
Problem:
The TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensors are known to fail, which can again affect the vehicle's performance. You may notice a lack of power when accelerating. If either of these sensors is faulty, the engine management warning light will illuminate on the dashboard.
Solution:
Get a diagnostic check to accurately identify the faulty sensor and install a replacement to fix the issue.
Difficulty level
EGR Valve blocked
Problem:
It is known for the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve to become blocked, which can significantly affect the vehicle's performance, leading to very poor operation.
Solution:
You can remove the EGR valve and clean out the build-up of thick black grease to free the valve and improve overall performance. Have a look at the video below to see how to clean the EGR valve.

Cracking noise from steering at low speeds
Problem:
When you straighten the steering wheel at very low speeds and hear a cracking noise, the broken stop caps could be causing it.
Solution:
You will need to fit replacement stop caps to fix the issue.

Lack of acceleration power
Problem:
If your Patrol lacks power when accelerating, it is usually caused by an issue with the turbo hose.
Solution:
Fitting a replacement turbo hose will solve the problem. We offer high-quality replacement turbo hoses.

Not Starting When Warm
Problem:
Cold starts work fine, but warm starts require several attempts to start the engine.
Solution:
Your first step is to check the cover plate and the O-ring on the injector. If either is worn, then you'll need to consult our parts list for a new injector system. If the injector appears to be functioning correctly, then the issue is likely with your fuel injector pump. This is a very low-cost part from BreakerYard and is easy to install.

Banging Noise From Rear
Problem:
You can hear a banging noise from the back of the car while driving. There might also be an increase in exhaust smoke.
Solution:
Check the bracket that holds your exhaust pipe in place. It's common for this to break on the Patrol, and the radiator will be banging against the chassis rail. Simply attach a bracket using some nuts and bolts, and the banging noise will stop.
Difficulty level
Overboosting
Problem:
The engine is over-boosting, and you might hear a knocking noise from the engine when you press the accelerator.
Solution:
The original Garrett turbocharger in the Patrol tends to have an inconsistent boost curve as it spools up. It's quite common for Patrol owners to resolve this issue by fitting a larger exhaust with a higher flow rate. You can find alternative exhaust systems on our parts list for the Patrol-GR, and anything larger than your current one will be advantageous.

Bumpy Driving
Problem:
The car bumps too much over any uneven surface.
Solution:
If your Patrol has been used to tow something heavy, it is important to understand that the rear shock absorbers endure significant stress as a result. If you can feel every bump in the road when driving, you should check your rear shock absorbers for damage and order replacements from our parts list.

Excessive Fuel Consumption
Problem:
You need to fill your fuel tank much more than you think you should.
Solution:
The Patrol-GR is already a thirsty car, so if you're filling up more than usual, it's a sign of a problem. Check your air filter and spark plugs first, and replace them if they are worn or degraded. Then, make sure your injector isn't stuck; if it is, order a new fuel-injection system from Breakeryard. If none of these seem to be the cause, then the issue is more mechanical. It could be a dragging brake or something as simple as under-inflated tyres.
